hi list, this makes two years running suffered plant melt- down late in season. outer 1/3 leaf edges start drooping, discoloring, turning brown and brittle. leaf stalks mushing out at vine connection. finally locate totally mushy secondary or main vine ! no obvious borer damage to vine, they are buried, but leaf stalks obviously suffered some borers. wondering if there's a farm extension agency or college associated lab that analyzes plant tissue ? is bacterial wilt, mosaic virus, and any of the other AG uglies only identified by matching your plant with pictures in publications ? i have 2 plants in 1200 sq ft patch. different seeds planted last two years, but damage occurs in the same plot, with no apparent damage to second plant. hoping for any suggestions ? ideas? thanks in advance this is a great list !

I've got pretty much the same thing happening, mostly to the older plant growth. At first I just thought the leaves were getting old, now I am not so sure. The plant is producing lots of new growth, that does not exhibit these symptoms, so if it is a disease it is only hitting the older stuff. I have been removing dead leaves almost daily and allowing a few tertiary vines to back fill.
My patch is 1400 sq ft and I think I have removed about 25% of it so far. I'll take some pictures tomorrow & post them to my diary, perhaps someone else will have some ideas.
