About two weeks ago my pumpkins (all two of them) developed these small dark orange blotches. They are very random but do seem to like the creases. I've been treating them with a bleach solution, but there's been no change. Is it terminal?

Some pumpkins do color up like this naturally. What is the mother?

The Mother (and the father too as far as that goes. . .) is a Glasier 642 which hails from that famous Mombert pumpkin. The plant looks great except for a tiny bit of PM which I'm trying to keep a handle on and some fading leaves by the main root.

I think I might have the same problem... check my diary. If not, can anyone help me with what I got, too? I'm in the exact same boat... a tiny bit of PM, nothing serious yet, and the "problem" seems to be getting worse. I haven't applied any ferts in a while (I gave up), and the weather has been cooler and wetter. Check my diary for pix:

Hey Lawman, I did see your pictures. Just curious, do you have a lot of mushrooms/toadstools sprouting around the patch too? These splotches also seem to have coincided with when I started to cover my pumpkins at night, so I stopped covering them until I find out what the deal is. . .

No, no mushrooms, although there are a few in the yard, but it has been pretty wet and cool lately. You have the same thing, or does my ugly beast have something different?

BTW, my second pumpkin (I also have 2) is blotch free at this point, although it's way smaller, and about 3 weeks younger.

I'm inclined to think those splotches aren't really a problem........but they could be. Are they as solid & firm as the sorrounding shell?

They are as firm as the rest of the skin. Maybe it's just the beginning of some type of cantalouping?

I don't really worry about color variances in these things unless the differen't colored spots are soft or have rot on them. Your spots don't look like they're problematic, but you can push on them to see if they're soft or not to be sure.

Dang I hate fighting my teenager for the computer! No, they're not soft, just ugly. Thanks you guys, now I can stop having pumpkin nightmares. It would be nice to know what causes them, etc. .. Hmmmm. . . I like that. . . Boom Boom's blotches. . . got a nice ring to it. . .

Compendium of Cucurbit Diseases refers to these as (believe it or not) "measles". They seem to occur in mature fruit in certain environmental conditions. They don't seem to cause problems...a cosmetic concern only. -- Chris

Mine have faded back into the pumpkin and are gone completely now?! The rough skin is still there, but the darker spots have basically vanished.
