i am looking for some squash seeds that my 78yr old dad use to grow. he got them years ago from a friend that got them in canada. they are gray in color and very large but he cant remember the name and i have been searching the net trying to find with no luck. i was hoping someone out there might be able to help. if anyone is a squash expert and think they might know, i can email a photo of one of them to you. i know my dad would really enjoy growing them again so if you can help out i would really appreciate it!!

Your probably looking for Hungarian Grey or another version of the Hungarian squash. And they are almost impossible to find anymore.........Paul

What do you mean "almost impossible" Paul? Lets get together as the best bunch of gourd growers on the planet and try to revive that strain! I will start running my search engines to try and find a few seeds. Heirloom seeds should never be let go extinct!!!

Blitz,

My guess is that he grew the Blue Hubbard, which is actually kind of gray, and very tasty! I grew some a few years back that had to be close to 50#. Why don't you e-mail your photo to this site, and we can all chip in?

gads, if you find some of those seed i'ld try to grow those hungarian gray seed and would send out seeds from my crop to anybody that wanted them for the price of a bubble pac just like my pumpkin seeds i've grown blue hubbard before and had them get close to 30lb most of them 10-15lb that's still a lot of squash to eat last year i grew blue pumpkins they are shaped like a lumina and are about the same size fine grained dark orange flesh with decent flavor i've got seeds for anyone who wants them

first off i want to thank everyone for there tips/help. i got to talk to my dad and he remebers growing the hubbard. i found an old paper clipping with his squash in it and i guess its something totally different. i think its a bananna squash and i have been looking around the net to find a similar one. i have seen some but either its not the same or my dad just happened to grow them larger than they are advertising. i submitted some pictures(my first time) in the grower diary section so when they are posted i hope i might get a few more suggestions! thanks again everyone!!

After viewing your photo, it looks more likely to be related possibly to the marrow, definately NOT a Blue Hubbard. I believe marrows are predominately green, so it may be a cross with something else. I think marrows are more popular with our friends across the pond. Alun, are you out there?

I once saw a "Hungarian Mammoth" offered by Burpee back in the early '80's. Have no idea what it looked like though. I searched their current website list & saw no mention of it now. Perhaps a junk collector like myself still has a 1980 Burpee seed catalog? Maybe someone who worked there 20 years ago can remember what became of it? I'll ask around at the trade shows next week.

I think our Marrows are the same as your Zucchini Squash.
There is a Grey Zucchini which looks green that could be it.
