I have spent a fair amount of time looking for a chat solution for the site. All of the solutions offered for free on the Internet don't apeal to me. They are either too hard to use, too hard to integrate, or use too many banner adds. So I wrote one myself. I am currently debugging it and hope to have it out soon. Now that we have the server moved to our office, this will be a lot easier. The biggest wrinkle is making this feature available to our WebTV Users.

If you would like to help test this new chat feature, please reply here. Please include the following: Browser type (IE, NS), version, and connection speed (56k, DSL, Cable...)

I'm game. I use usually use Netscape 4.76, but sometimes use IE 5.5 when Mozilla doesn't work. Connection speed is cable.

I just tried it from my work connection and it seemed okay. I did notice that it appears to reload my browser every 5 seconds or so....this could be a problem at my very slow dial up connection and my ancient version of Netscape at home. I will log into it tonight (if possible) around 9PM if anyone wants to join me there.

Attention Beta Testers:

I made some changes to the chat subsystem.

You may now choose what chat room you would like to enter.
You can now type in up to 255 characters per message.
You cannot see any messages that were typed before you entered the room.

Please let me know if you see any bugs introduced with my new code.

Thats great John...this way conversations won't be misunderstood by people who weren't there at the time to interpret tone and attitude (much ribbing going on there !LOL) Also..will allow more frank progress discussions as the season moves on...wouldn't want people to know I'm really only growing orange pumpkins this year and I knew it would get out through the chat..(Scott seems a bit nervous about that)....keep this under your hat and thanks for the changes, will let you know how they work.............G

Hey John....your destination links dont seem to be working from the chat room page. It could just be my Netscape again....maybe i should just start logging on from IE5, eh?
I have bigpumpkins.com as my home page, and can go there from the Netscape "home button", but i cant get out by clicking the "destination" drop list while in the chat room.

Yup...just confirmed it. Logged on with IE, and could get out of the chat room through the destination drop list. Must just be Netscape. Since the chat is optomized for IE, i'll just start accessing it thru IE, instead of Netscape.

Hmm..

I know what that is, it is because the Netcape verion uses frames and the ie version does not.

When in the Netscape version, only the top 3rd of the page changes. Not the whole page... at any rate, I think that the navigator on the top of the chat pages will be different than on the other pages of the site.

Has anyone been making contact in the chatrooms? I must be just missing everybody. Of course, 8:00 is the time my better 1/2 is checking her mail, and instant messaging with her friends. I'll keep at it.......i know i'll run into somebody sooner, or later.
