Do you think that roof de-icing cables could be used for soli heating? Presumably they are weather proof since they are meant to sit on top of a roof during the winter. What about pipe-heating cables? I'm looking for cheap alternatives.

The cable you speak of are thermostatically controlled to come on when temperatures go below freezing or just above that. So no...The growing cables you see others growing have a built in thermostat to keep the soil 20 degrees the ambient air temp.
