In my opinion....May 1st. or last week in April. Your plants will likely need frost protection in early May too. So plan for that now. Oh, and don't forget to start some backups a little later too.

AG1, if I remember correctly, the theory is to count back approx 150 days from date of desired harvest. Approx 70 days of plant growth before pollination and approx 80 days of fruit growth after pollination. Hope that helps. Peace, Wayne

Here in NY we usually plan on starting the seeds about May 1, give or take a week. This is based on weighoffs which are usually the last weekend in Sept., or first weekend in Oct. Starting the seeds earlier doesn't seem to have any advantage.

then again, you are exactly southeast of me-- i am in La Fayette, NY....when it gets near pollination time (July 1st, 4th, etc.) there could be an arrangement, depending on each others' seed lineup...'till then>>> HAND=Have A Nice Day

What about me in NE North Dakota? If I start the plants indoors May 15, and have them in the garden by June 1st, will I still be able to pollinate by July 1st if the weather is nice?

herbie, I don't think you'll make july 1.... but probably mid July. That might be the best you can do unless you have eary season protection set up. I've pollinated in mid-late July and still gotten 700-800 lbs.
