ok, This yr I am limited on funds, and need advice on what and where to get a good reliable heating matt. Is there a difference on them?
I found one at lowes for 32 bucks.

e-bay has some of the best deals on them compared to catalogs. I have to get one more this year and compared and theres some good deals there. 32 bucks what size is it 10 by 10 or 20 by 20. If its 10 by ten its a little high but if its bigger its a decent deal.

CCW, shop around. $32 seems a bit pricy to me. My heat mat cost under $20 and that was when the Canadian dollar was at 85 cents to the U.S. dollar.

ccw,i've had a garden for years and have be short of money to,i start my mater plant inside the house, what i've used for years is two old slow cookers (crock pots) i got 2 one day at a yard sale $1.50each, they work fine for a few maters, dont no how many peat pots you could get inside one, turn it on low and put an old towel in the bottom i always left the lid off.

For the past few years I have used a 15 watt light bulb in a large, plastic cooler. The lid is open just enough to let the electric cord in. I put a thermometer in there and it keeps the temperature around 86 degrees. Can't get much cheaper than that.

Iowegian, Is this a pretty safe(worried about fire danger) way?
I have been worring how I will germ my pumpkin seeds.
Any tricks on how not to cause a fire? thanks

CCW,
If you decide to use a heating mat, be sure to keep the seeds away from the mat itself. Seeds in a moist paper towel inside of a baggie will burn if they are ON the heating mat. Be sure to place something in there to raise them up like plastic pots.
Good luck with whichever method you use!

Yeah chuck I found that out the hard way. Now I just take plastic coffe containers fill with a decent seed mix. Water it in put seed in, cover with saran wrap and place those on the mats. It germinates almost 100 percent of the time.

CCW, howdy from warm, rainy, windy Kentucky!!! I have in the basement an oil filled, radiator type room heater. Each spring, I put a towel on top of it, and then a thick styro cooler on top of the towel...takes a couple of days to regulate the soil temp in my sprouting pots,(adjusting temp settings, and how open the lid is) but when it settles to 85 degrees or so, I am usually ready to take the sprouts out of the damp paper towels, that have been on top of the satellite box...(perfect temp it seems)!!! Also, older heating pads don't seem to have the 2 hr. shut off thing!!! Hope this helps!! Peace, Wayne

Shouldn't be any fire danger. Everything in the cooler is damp and shouldn't burn. I have the bulb in a plastic trouble light fixture so the bulb won't touch anything.

I accidently put a coolor over the heating vent, doesnt work to well, so i tried laying it sideways, witht the lid facing the vent, a little better.

kunz, garage sales, yard sales...or just go to yer local pharmacy...I have seen them at less than 10 bucks...just look at the instructions first, and make sure it does not include an auto shut off feature...yep, those are the cheap ones!!! LOL Start early, to get the temp regulated properly!!! It takes a few days for the temp in a gallon (or larger) pot of planting mix to regulate it's self!!! Hope this helps!!! Peace, Wayne
