A friend told me once the stem starts coming up, that i'll have to do some pinching? I have a green thumb but haven't heard of this, do I have to, and what do I have to do? It doesn't mean take the leaf off and put it in water does it?

Yikes! I don't know what your friend was talking about unless they meant you should pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming that the season had started. I save my plant pinching for the tertiary vines later in the season. You should too.

Working on direct light hit one Pennsylvania grower pinches, cuts or removes leaves that are hidden under other leaves. He claims he wants all leaves with the ability to fully face the sun. Yes...most of his growing tips have been well within average managements seen here. This one I am not at all sure about.I can think of no correlation in nature where mother does not have some twentyfive percent of her total leaves hidden or shaded by other leaves.

In the event of a hail storm or other physical damage some of those under leaves may be natures way of providing reserve???
