Recently(I live in Florida) I started some seeds inside wet paper towels. The pie and snackjact (pepos) have formed little roots, but the Big Max (Maxima) shows no signs of forming little radicles yet. I believe this is normal but I just wanted some input. Conditions are the same for the pepo and maxima seeds

Thank you

seed coats on the pepos is probably a little thinner, which allows water in quicker. If memory serves me correctly, big max take a little longer to germ anyway. No need to be concerned yet...smaller seeds usually germ quicker.

Also snackjack is a hull-less seed variety. They should sprout within a day. Alex.

It took a a good 5 days soaking to be my big max to put out a tap root. My "pie pumpkins" took no time at all.

aside from just room temperature, which, luck you this time of year, may be in the 70s, lol, is there any heat being applied/seed germination mat, that sort of thing?
i think any seeds of a pumpkin variety will sprout more reliably if they are subjected to 85-95 degrees F----
any higher is unnecessary, although i have had plenty
germinate fine at 100+ by accident, oops, and anything lower
may contribute to failure to germinate or rotting before it can sprout.....indeed, you are in the right message board for this information. good luck--practice a lot! eric

Be patient. What ever you do DO NOT dig them up to check on the roots. My fatal first year mistake. Alex.

Triumph anyway! 2 of the big maxes that i tried to experiment with by taking off the seed hull and putting in wet paper towels have grown tiny radicles. By the way, I know its stupid to dig up the plant to see the roots but why? What does it do to the plant?

They are fragile and easy to break.

Sorry. I did not mean in any way to imply that you were "Stupid"; rather I meant that that particular mistake, which I have in fact committed in the past is.

how close are Big Max seeds to AG seeds? are they close enough to practice with, I've got over 200 seeds from my 110lb big max last year to practice with.

I wouldn't. They look pretty different. Alex.
