Here's an idea for EVERYbody - Since we are all concerned with fungus and rot when doing this, let's all try some FUNGICIDE in the seed-starting mix' water that is used to 'begin', lol with; i have some Daconil from about 10 years ago just to TRY this with, and probably it's been done before, but if you start a fire, have the extinguisher right there, eh?

Use it at the recommended rate - Any time you do otherwise, you're just adding another variable to what could be the 'solution';

Concerning H2O2, if it's 3% from the drug store, i've never diluted if further and ostensibly have had no problems (SEE ABOVE) - I've also been noticing lately the possible PREDATION of failed seeds in Mycorrhizae that i always use in my SS mix - think about it > you dead? you food! so, if a seed fails it becomes food for the fungus, (else it becomes a symbiotic 'Home on the Roots' relationship, lol) so, if we are NOT using Myco in the SS mix, ARE using fungicide to kill any fungus otherwise AND sterilizing the seed in H2O2 3% for several hours (yeah, as mentioned, up to 6 is good), and THEN adding Myco and so on to the planting hole MIX since and once the seed is of course established, perhaps we'll see better seed-starting results all around, for ALL years. I wish you and me lotsa luck! eric g (*_*)

This and other deets are being discussed at this board as well:

none of the ones i had soaked in H2O2 and then Daconil for 6 hours each had sprouted, but there was no noticeable fungus evident, either, lol, and those seeds have been a hit or miss option, anyway, so i have soaked about 6 more in Daconil and put them in the Sprouting Fridge at 75*F in AGAR which is the way that only ONE out of about 6 i had planted in AGAR sprouted last year at this time;
This is not to say that it doesn't work (using fungicide in the sprouting medium for OLDER seeds) but just that if it ain't gonna ssprout, well, what he said! 'Bout 2 days in on the 75-degreers at this time---eg

All my seed mix in the greenhouse and for my pumpkin seeds have banrot in it. Water soluble that is added to soil as a solution when mixed. Difficult to grow geraniums without it. I always had problems with black stem rot when I don’t use it.

hey, thanks - will check it out---i have a lot of explaining to do to Myco but it'll get between the seedlings and my already-Myco'd native soil early-on, lol---eg

I read an article that said thiophanate methyl was inhibitory to myco. Daconil is ok. The article was on lebanonturf.com.

Hey, thanks and I will check that out as well, being the weekend now. Truth is that anything I sterilized with H2O2 and/or Daconil got seemingly as laden with fungus as any other time, but that's probably because I've had this one experiment in the works for over a week + now, lol, but it'd be even more like my luck that what I'm using would be ineffective to start with; Labor of Love, I guess---eg

I am having a good day - indoors now but will go out again later;

A seed of mine, the 607.5 Gerry from '09 (1142 Van Kooten X 904 Stelts)
is sprouting, whereas i have not been able to get them to reliably sprout
for abouuuuut 8 years now, and one sprouted last year but never got to the patch,
and one so far this year is sprouting after soaking them in 3% Hydrogen Peroxide for
12 hours and then 30 hours later in Jiffy, Mycorrhizally-Enhanced Seed Starting
Mix @ 93 degrees F? BOINNNNGGG!!!

well, one out of 16 so far, but this is the greatest
event thus far in seed sprouting for me in a lonnnnnnng time.
I had also resurrected the Gerry Germ-Bucks for intensive bottom-heating;

I'm SUPER-Happy!!!

Knowing how to make it happen is all that life is about.
I can't wait to see how many more also help to make my day!

later---eric gerry

Lol - May be Fool's Gold from when I was a kid -
Started out Boy Genius and then found Rock and Roll/Guitar;
Downhill ever since, lol.

Perhaps it was a 'club foot' on one seed like I've been seeing in trials otherwise; I know enough now to give them a chance as I would any other - I've been sprouting into AGAR for so long that a soil disturbance has seemed like an earthquake. Hey, any 'Happy' is good for the morale, so, this test is continuing! eg
