I have 1 and 2 gallon pots. What is the optimum time to get them in the ground after germination? I was thinking one week. But the two gallon pots may allow for a little more time. Any thopughts?

try a few test seeds and then try to plant your good plants in the ground before the roots hit the bottom of the pots.
This is usually about a week in such containers but it depends on your germination temps, whether or not you file the seeds, moisture, etc...

Russ, The ideal time to plant them out is may 20 or so. I believe you will be alright with those pots

The less time in the pot the better. To avoid root binding.

Though it is nice to wait for the first true leaf so we have an idea which direction the plant will grow in.

So the vessle has to be large enough to not constrict the roots in the 5-7 days that will take after germination.

Does this make sense?

Steve, thanks for the input. I hope 2 gallon pots will provide up to two weeks worth of indoor time. Using Cory's date as a guide I would like to push that up by 7 to 10 days. I hope to be in the ground between May 10th to 12. Timing is everything as last year I had root bound plants. So I hope to start them as early as April 26th. But as Michel suggested earlier the tests will tell if my quess is correct.

I planted mine outside the last two years around may 20 - 23, and they seem to be ok as the weather was great from that date on . i planted my plants april 28 and may 1.

May I just add that even if you plant outside on or around May 20th you should protect the plants with a mini greenhouse of some sort. The simplest way is to just cover them with some plastic while using something to keep the plastic from touching the leaves such as rebar or thick wire or pvc pipe.

Don't give mother nature a chance to mess up your season because she'll gladly try to do that every time!

By the way....I used to live in Oshawa and visited friends in Barrie a few times and did some great fishing there. Say hi to Barrie for me!
