In my diary I mostly blab a lot, but I actually thought this was an intersting picture really worth sharing. Because I think this fits perfectly in line with what you can generally expect. (There may occasionally be an oddball old seed that behaves like a much younger one.( But other than that, this pic accurately shows the normal aging progression.

Fyi I still highly recommend stripping the seed coat and embryo sack off if no root is seen in 72 hours or so, re-rinsing in standard hydrgogen peroxide, then planting the seed at the soil suface where it can get some light and begin to green up, & misting occasionally with dilute h202 to keep the moisture up and the pathogens down.
This is the most foolproof "old seed" germination method Ive found (although in some ways its more like a tissue culture than a planting a seed.)

& ps the old seed in the pic didnt emerge on its own I stuck it in that position and I am babying it along. If I hadnt helped it, it would have rotted long before it ever had the strength to actually emerge.
