Some mistakes... Some thoughts.

2/3 of the 1448 Bongers. My own "potting mix" killed the 3rd one.

I'm trying some direct seeding, also some shallow tray planting. I did a "no dig" method where I placed the shallow tray with the sprouts atop the soil and made a shallow mound using promix. I'm hopeful that this method works because digging is another corner I'd like to cut, if possible. The promix comes dry enough and crumbly enough that it might deter slugs and other insects.

I am getting an early start but I'm not trying to get a fast start. I have a theory that the easiest (maybe not best) way to get a big plant by early June with the least effort and expense is just to plant a few weeks earlier but skip the soil heating cables. The plants will grow slow but as long as they are big by early June then it doesnt matter how slow they grew... Thats my theory. And not worry too much about fertilizing them perfectly either. Once things warm up, do a tissue test to see if the nutrients are really there or not.

Trying new things is what I really enjoy most. Thats the cake for me. But if something grows well then thats cake with icing.
