The potatoes soil is cover with old wheat straw, which pass one year exposed to the rain and sun. Hopefully weeds and wheat seeds don't still having germination ability. Some studies show that, besides water retemption and soil cooling effect, the straw mulch help the potatoes to resist insect attacks.
