some nut ( a rich one I guess) sent me 200 dollars for a 1260. Never heard of the guy before I opened the envelope. I can't believe #1. anybody would be willing to pay that much money for a pumpkin seed, it might not even sprout! #2. put that much cash in a plain white envelope. Things sure are changing in the world of giant pumpkins. I might be old school growing, but I think I liked it better about 10 years ago when things were simple, friendly and not so competitive

thing is, it used to be taboo because there was a patent or PVP thing on the Atlantic Giant. it still SHOULD be, (taboo), but yes, these are changing times concerning the ethical content or whatever you'd call it when it comes to buying and/or selling seeds. Rhetorical question:
don't you think that if you had
20 seeds left from your...
(i am NOT pointing out any particular grower here!) ---"you" means anyone---
...prized pumpkin, and you could get even 100 dollars each
from people that would pay that much for one, and you have a kid in college, your SUV needs repair, you've always WANTED a Bow-Flex, etc. ,lol, that you would at least CONSIDER selling the seeds to supplement your income in your time of need?

if anyone is willing to spend !!!300-400!!!!--500!!!!! dollars for one seed or one seed plus maybe a bonus one to put it over the top, at the auctions, and we've seen it happen on numerous occasions, then why is it SOOOOO wrong for otherwise respectable pumpkin growers to sell seeds to each other in a private manner? it is like "okay over here, but not okay over there". i realize that the sale of seeds off to the side takes away from the auction sites and that is a bit on the sad side...as far as i can see, though,
that is the main bad thing that has come from the Dills'
patent thing expiring. i wish it could be reinstated or something to take it back to the way it was. indeed!!!
if i had it right now, i would pay $200 for a 1260.4.
at an auction or otherwise.
here's a rhyme: money's meant...to be spent.
PERHAPS---when Brooks said email me private, anyone who had one coulda done just that.
no arguments please, just shedding MY light on the pumpkin world, lol.... eric

Just my opinion, but I still think that there are so many good seeds around, that you really don't have to spend much money for something that might throw something big.

Well, I look at it this way Craig, 1 or 200 hundred bucks for a hobby for 3 months is pretty cheap compared to what you could spend each weekend playing golf, going out drinking, ect ect, And as far as the competitive side goes, I dont stand a chance in my second year,Im not even thinking about 1000lbs, Reason why I want the 1260 is for the genetics for all my future seeds , that is what Im after. Worth 200 to me? Yes sir. Why would someone spend over $100,000 for a baseball card? I mean, well we traded them at one time, right?

all good points. I guess for us old time growers , back when there was only 15 or so pumpkins on the 700 pound list, everyone pretty much knew each other(usually by phone or letter) seeds were always traded for free. with the explosion of giant pumpkin growing seeds began to be sold quietly amoung growers. big money for seeds at auctions, and it has taken off. I really expect in a few years to see growers lists of seeds posted with prices for each on pumpkin web sites. I guess everything changes with time. B.Brooks, you do stand a chance in your second year, it happened to me way back in 1994

Who could forget 1994 at Topsfield? before that year no one had ever brought anything over 800 lbs to Topsfield, Craig skipped over the 800's and brought the 914, " and the crowd goes wild" i think i still have a 914 seed collecting dust some where?

Eric, nothing comes cheaply these days. This past summer, Kodak decided it no longer needed my services. Looking for work after 27 years is not easy, so I've gone back to school to get my teaching certificate. Putting one kid through school is tough, but now I'm also putting myself through school again. Maybe that's why I'm not in a big hurry to pay $200 for a seed.

By the way, the video was a blast, thanks.

Good luck Dave. I had only 6 years in my job when it hit me like you. But guess what? That family owned comapany was investing more money and interests into playing and owning a golf court than looking for their own business and the employees depending on their jobs.
It´s always a mistake to turn your hobby into something that burns a $ sign into your eye, at that point it won´t work anyway.
I don´t see a problem with growers selling seeds or paying for them at auctions or dealers though. It just helps to raise some money to improve the work which is at least a benefit for all of us.
