Hello,

I am new to giants and was wondering is someone could tell me a few good choices of seed. I would like to get the best possible seed for having a chance of growing a very large pumpkin. Also I have read people talking about some seeds being very expensive? is this a indication of better seed? if some seeds are expensive what do they sell for and what makes them so expensive? Thank you very much for your time, have a great day.

The expensive part comes from the seed auction held during the winter to support the weigh offs and pumpkin sites. Although "Excellent seeds" can be had for free, for the cost of a self addressed stamped bubble pack, and a short note requesting seeds. Nothing like not being able to get a seed valued at $400 dollars to not germinate.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. Do you have any types in mind that are good for going big? Thank you very much, have a great day.

There are several types of Giant pumpkins. Almost every one on this site grows a variety called Atlantic Giant. You will see we often call them by weight/grower/year. Such as I am growing a 1370 Rose 03. This pumpkin weighed 1370 lbs and was grown by Jerry Rose in 2003. The other varieties are Prize Winner and Big Max. They typicaly give you a pumpkin weighing 80-200lbs. Atlantic Giants on the other hand with proper conditions can grow to 3/4's of a ton. Just hold on with seed requests until the fall when we are in the seed request and bubble pack mode.....Shannon

Thank you very much, yes I am going to hold off looking for seeds until the fall. I am just wondering if there are any seeds people would suggest trying to get for growing a large pumpkin next year? Thank you very much for your time, have a great day.

The best place to start looking for the "right" seed for you is in the growers diarys. Look at what each grower planted, and how the fruit is doing. However, keep in mind that the same seed in another growers hands may perform differently. Try to find a grower who has a similar climate and growing style as yourself, and then see how their fruit are doing. If they have some nice pumpkins going, you might try to locate the same seeds the other grower is using, or even obtain seeds from those fruit that are currently growing.
Looking through diarys from past years is another way to find a good seed. While I think "proven" seeds may have some small advantage, I truly believe that most seeds have the potential to grow a huge pumpkin.
