Not trying to single anyone out because I think we all do it, or have done it, and I know I'm guilty of it, BUT...
When one posts looking for a particular seed, and especially if they request you specify what you're looking for in return, it's really frustrating to get a reply that says "make an offer".
Some of us have been trading quite awhile, have LOTS of seeds, and to make an offer without knowing what the other person might *generally* be interested in, is like rolling dice....ALOT of dice, at once.
Offer, counteroffer, re-offer, re-counteroffer, on and on and on and on.....
If you have the seed someone is looking for, please don't go fishing, just say what it is you're looking for, or at least what *type* of seed or traits interests you...green, orange, certain lineage, certain growers seeds, something.
I don't know about anyone else, but I just want to know what you want in return, or "some" idea. I have hundreds and hundreds of seed, wouldn't begin to know what to offer, and don't look forward to 10 e-mails back and forth trying to figure out what you want.
I know what I want. If you don't in return, then why are you interested in trading it?
Blind fishing is frustrating for all parties involved.
Sorry to rant, just something I see as a hindrance in seed trading.

This post was not meant to be taken as an attack, personal insult, or made in mean-spiritedness. It's simply my personal opinion on a matter that I thought a few others might be able to use as a "suggestion", nothing more.
If I have offended anyone, that was NOT my intention.

I have to disagree to a point. Say I have some very nice seeds that I know I will not grow, but then again I am not looking for anything special. So I guess I should not post that I have some seeds to trade, what they are and to email me an offer huh.

Person 1: "I'm looking for seed ABC...anyone got one for trade?"
Person 2: "Yeah, I got one...make me an offer"
Person 1: "Here's my seed list. YOU make me an offer"

In my book, this is the smoothest way! Too bad we'll all never go for it...

But the thing too is, If you really don't know the person very well, you could tell him just what your looking for and he can say, " Great I got two of them and would be glad to give you one for a trade on what I want." Then you can send the seed you got on it's way. The guy on the other end can throw any seed he wants to in a little envelope and label it with what you asked for. Then you recieve the seed from the trader you traded with. You open it and you look at it and say, I already got one 961 Daletas and wanted another. You know it's a big brown seed and this &%#@*&@ sent me a small white seed. So you got S%$&#@* which this has happen to me. So I don't trade with anyone I personally don't know. Someone always ruins it for us serios growers.

I feel your pain Dave. Or should I say I have felt your pain on more than one occasion. And, I have probably provided pain in my travels. But(and not to say you personally shouldn't do what makes you feel most comfortable), if we all decided to only trade with people we know; 1) our sport wouldn't be where it is today and neither would the weights, and 2) we would all be wishing we could grow seeds that we would never be able to obtain.
As I see it...if EBAY can do it, we can do it! They have prospered in this same sort of environment. Why/How? I think because the vast majority of us are honest, good natured people. And most of the rest fear public ostracizing! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Communication, communication, communication.

What "torques" me is when someone posts a "want" and say what they have to trade. When you offer to trade, they then reply that they want to think about it! Decision constipation is frustrating!

And...like Ebay....a buyer feedback post available to the public for bad deals should be allowed. Ebay does it so others can evaluate their willingness to trade/buy/sell....so, back to the original...if you got burned by a grower, can prove it, in order to minimize the damage and prevent others from getting burned let them know !

I understand the decision constipation. But half the time someone finds out you have a seed and they want it. You're not actively looking for anything and don't neccessarily want to trade it but who knows...maybe they will offer something to entice you to trade it? When asked "what you want for it" I have to say..."Make me an offer I can't refuse"...heck, I'm not actively trying to trade it and have no burning desires for anything you have....entice me!....make me trade it. YOU are the one looking for the seeds, not me. Then they turn around and tell everyone I abused them....thats why I seldom trade anymore.

I agree with Glenn, trading is just that, a trade, you want something I have, make me an offer, if it is that much of a bother during the off season, then hit the auctions, but then again, you would still be making them an offer.....lol

I really don't think you should expect to see somebody's seed list. If you email your list to somebody, then it might end up in the hands of 100 people. People sometimes don't want to see their seeds on somebody elses seed list. I agree that you should have a want list if you want to trade. I want another 1370!!!! :0)

Just a suggestion, to those with seed collections, may be they could make up a list of the seed they are willing to trade and when asked to make a offer, they could provide a list of what they are willing to let go in order to get the seed they want. That would give Glenn or others a chance to see what might entice them rather than wasting time when they are really not interested in trading in the first place. Just a suggestion. Remember last year a puppy dog done the trick, I would have got him a kennel if I had known. LOL

Come on Poppy, you don't really think something with that much sense and reason will work? Do you? <:^)>
It's all about the haves and have nots. If we want a seed, we need to expect to jump through hoops, and; if we are the one with the seed, then we have to make sure we "win" the trade.
Easy, logical communication, followed by a fair and equitable win win trade? Come on. Selling makes the world go 'round. If your the one with the need, blow the dust off your wallet and step up to the pump.
Well...ok, it's not always that bad. There are still a few good eggs left.
Sorry, still feeling the sting from years past, BF
