Finished my first year trying to grow AG's in Missouri. Managed a 142.5lb specimen despite the blistering heat we had. My vines really suffered and the fruit stopped growing in that heat, but my seed came from a northern strain. I'm getting a couple of seeds from the Arkansas state record, but would like to try any other seeds from pumpkins that did well in the heat this year. I don't have any seeds to trade, but have plenty of blueberry preserves I'd be happy to swap with! jworley1@hotmail.com

Thanks! James

For some reason my 281.6 (845 Bobier cutting x 842 Eaton) '04 did very well in the heat of the Southern US. It thrived in one southern patch where 2 950 Boytons failed.

Here is a tip / suggestion -

Monitor Boily's diary (Alex's dad2) and send him a mail or two of encouragement. He's got it HOT down under (Australia) again. Heat tolerance is something that he is aware of and frequently notes in his diary. He always has good genetics to work with. Request his seed at the end of his season.

110 heat index? Childs play! Don't get me started... <:^)>

Take a look at this thread:
http://bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=19&p=135333
These are ones I've heard others mention:
1178 Rivard
845 Bobier
991 Hunt
I personally have only tried the 991 out of these. I found no difference. The difference in turgor I found had more to do with the plant's "stage of growth" and "over-all health of the plant"(over-all plant stress). BF

just a side note, No, I repeat "no" seed is 100% Heat tolerant. Some of the best heat tolerant seeds available such as the 845 bobier or 950 boyton, or anything else, can totally be terrible in the heat. It's a matter of some luck on getting the super heat tolerant ones. But going with a particular seed up your chance considerably for being heat tolerant. My 861 shows promise as well, grown off of the 950 boyton this year. I have an 861 up and going in my backyard and it did fine in 93 degree heat a week ago with no shade of misting. Jimmy

Ed the 1178 Rivard did very well it did a 180 on me early, and had to turn over back to patch over a weeks time, the main split at 12" from crown, grown in first year soil soil was so so best I could do in one year it grew in 300sq ft heat Index high was 110f, and avg was 90-95f I didn't water from mid sept no rain either, and it reached 620.1Lbs certified no heat stress. My soil is now 300 fold better finished with cover crop on, and next year going to be whole new story! the pumpkin grew over 95 day's, and was perfect condition. I limited its true growth do to my own fault very little ferts. Patch has been enlarged, and plant size will be around 650+ next year. Rock, and shellie rivard have been very very kind to me. 805 Pukos grows well in the south. A couple bought it from me, and gave me the seeds back crossed with 598 Zaychkowsky04 723 Bobier X 735 Pukos. Grow'em big Ed.

Ed I just went with winter rye, temps here have dropped to 32f, at night, and its still grwing well. This is the 1st time I did this. I'm going to try my best from what I learned this year, from the great people on this website. Next spring I'm going to grow'em or blow'em going to give the plants, and fruit all they want.
best of luck to you too Ed.
Roger.
