Jordan most growers will gladly give you male flowers that they are not using for pollination. It is very handy to have someone close by. So when the crosses you are planning are not cooperating.

Just wondering, how long can you freeze pollen and have it be good?

Maybe it would last a little longer if you cut the flower a day before it opened on its own? Yes? No?
They have same day delivery service, but we're talking mucho dinero.

I sent out some green 845 Bobier males in 2003 to a fellow grower around 400 miles away. Unfortunately there was a little miscommunication and the box arrived later than planned. It cost me about $20 to send it one day. If theres a next time, I'll use dry ice and one of those foam containers they use to send frozen steaks and seafood. This year I had males in the frige for 3 days and they pollinated okay in the patch.

Make sure to call the receiving party ahead of time. And NEVER ship on any other days but Monday & Tuesday. Thus a same State UPS delivery will arrive in 24-48 hours at the regular UPS Ground fee. Second Day shipping would work for more distant deliveries.

Wow, pretty soon we're going to be selling clones and selling this and that and every other part of a pumpkin plant.

Jordon, the luck on 1 or 2 days wait for Male flowers is not good. Frozen pollen not much luck , there are a few growers working on that, that show promise. For your sake grow your own males on just a pollinator plant. Fresh pollen from your own is the way to go! Rog

This topic needs to be discussed further. Jordan your idea while simplistic is feasible and worthwhile to pursue. The cost of shipping is really the only prohibitive factor.

I have kept pollen stored in the fridge for up to two weeks and successfully pollinated female flowers several times. The petals are removed and they are stored in small Tupperware containers until ready for use. In fact each plant I grow usually has its own storage container in my refrigerator.

I successfully stored frozen pollen in the freezer during Feb 2005 and pollinated a female in June of this year. Keeping the pollen dry was the biggest challenge. Vacuum packaging may work even better than the slow natural warming technique I used.

Shipping flowers is a very common practice. We don't want the flower just the pollen. The AG flower is very tender and delicate. Shipping just the pollen in sealed test tubes or other devices may be very practical for isolated growers or those requiring a special cross. It's just another level of desire and skill that is sometimes a prerequisite to produce the right progeny.

Didn't Pappy need male flowers bad three, four years back??..had a plant full of females and no males around!

kahuna, so you are saying you were able to keep frozen pollen for at least 4 months and were able to pollinate flowers with it successfully? That's pretty good. I'm assuming that the flowers were from the previous year so that would probably mean that the pollin was even older, maybe from September or October?

Wow. It looks like somebody may need to start a pollen business. It would be like the groups that broker bull semen.

So, if somebody has enough room in their freezer, they could start collecting pollen, maybe pay a small price for "deposits" and charge a little more for "withdrawals".
Like a sperm bank, but for pumpkins.
Next Biggie, this is your mission.
But before you open something like a sperm bank, might wanna change your name so people dont get the wrong idea :)
