Hi,

I'm a new grower, or will be next year. I have some seeds from a 1049lb pumpkin that are drying now, (no idea of the background) I'd like to get some other seeds to get a few different plants in the ground next year.

Not really sure what I'm looking for, just something with some promise. Anyone want to try mine?

If anyone wants to trade email tupper_@hotmail.com
I'm in Canada if that matters. I'm not sure how that borders are with seeds.

Who or where did you get your seeds from? I'm in the Lindsay area and am interested. I'm also the Pres. of the Giant Vegetable Growers of Ontario (GVGO). Check out our website at www.gvgo.ca We are holding a raffle right now and later in early March we will be holding our 2006 membership drive. For $20 you will receive over 15 good seeds from some of last year's great crosses, as well as 3 newsletters, plus many other benefits. Email me by clicking on the little envelope above my name. I look forward to hearing from you. Take care.

perhaps you plant some (there could be no better seeds for a new grower than ones from a ONE-THOUSAND-PLUS-POUND PUMPKIN), lol, or get with whoever the pumpkin is from and get a handle on the genetics of it. i would assume that anyone who grows a 1000-plus fruit knows what he or she is doing and would know what he or she planted.
otherwise, it is like a car without a title;
someday, you'll want to know where or what it came from----

I think he got the seeds out of Frank Catapano's 1049 from 2004. I can't think of the cross, but I think it's was grown on his own 767 (723 x 846) that is doing so well for him.

if they are from 2004 why are they "drying now"?

They are out of a 2005, I guess I'll ask in the store and see if anyone knows the origin of the pumpkin and the seeds it was grown from.

No I didn't grow this beast, but the weight was written on the outside, and it sure was huge enough that I didn't doubt it.

Here's a shot in the dark-there were two 1047's at the Port Elgin weighoff(around 200km from Erin)and the store obtained one of them.Maybe the marker smudged on the pumpkin or...... I'm just guessing.

Erin Ontario...sounds like a VERY hot babe,
like Kelly Monaco, lol...i am sure there are a number
of great seed lines that got their start from an unknown origin...this is just very late in the game! i wish you luck finding out the heritage of the fruit and i still think you should plant a couple...a bird in the hand....a seed in the hand is...ahhh, well, you know what i mean----eric

Thanks, yep I'll definitely plant a couple next year to see what happens, if they came form a big whopper like this they must have some type of back ground.

It was sitting out by the dumpster of the Apple Factory on HWY 7 between Georgetown and Brampton. Mike-S - thats possible.

That would explain the missing ad in the classified section of the Toronto Sun. "Missing, a 1047 lb pumpkin, round and orange. Last seen near Brampton. Will the finder please send it by package post to [I won't write the address]. Reward: 25 pumpkin seeds and $10 for postage."

I believe that the 1047 lb. Pumpkin was purchased from the grower by somebody at the Port Elgin weigh-off

That was Doug Fisher, anyone know how I can contact him to confirm and find out this pumpkins background?

Bill Donkers also had a 1047.5# pumpkin at Port elgin.

1047#, well that's different than 1049#. Yes there were two that size this season. One by Doug Fisher (1047) & Bill Donkers (1047.5). I'm not sure of the genetic background, but I could find out. It might take a day or two though.

Yeah I know it's different, it a hunch, but no one seems to have grown a local 1049# this year.

If you could find out if they did sell their pumpkin to the Apple Factory that would be the baby.

After looking at the photos on the Port Elgin web site, I believe that it was the 1043.5 that I saw leaving with the pumpkin buyer. This person also offered to purchase my pumpkin.

Maybe contact the weigh-off organizers. If the fruit was weighed then the grower was registered.

It will be registered at the Port Elgin office. They took the genetic info down at the weigh off. Contact Pam @ pinkster@bmts.com She should be able to help you out.
