Hi all

I have a question. If your trading with a person from another contry and the seed they send you is confiscated by customs what do you do? do you still send them the seed in the trade our not? Thought i woul ask this question because i've been wondering if people have bee screwed on seed deals like this. For example: one just pretends to say they lost it in the mail but really kept the seed and get your seed to because they say that the seed was lost in the mail. Any thoughts.

Swapping seeds is a matter of confidence, no matter within or across borders.

Yes, it is a very risky proposition. Not only are you dealing with the integrity of the person you are trading with, but you are also dealing with international customs. Unless you personally know the grower you are trading with, I wouldn't recommend it. On April 15 last year I and several other people were sucked in to a "last minute urgent trade" to help a grower get the seeds they needed to salvage their season. The grower made virtually the same "trade" with several of us. None of us have received the seeds we were promised. In fact if I ever get the seed I was promised, I probably won't grow it because I now have such a low level of confidence in the person I was dealing with. Let my losing two 1370 Rose seeds and two 996 Bobier seeds be a lesson for everyone.

Are you asking because this has actually happened to you?

No. However i am waiting for seeds from over the bourder. I haven't recieved the seed that was promised to me yet and its been about two months since i did the trade. I didn't lose any seeds but i'm afraid that the guy i was trading with lost a good seed. i was just wondering if i should send him the sed i promised or another seed i have that is really good instead.

I would follow through no matter what, unless there is indication that you're being tricked. no way to tell I guess. I would e-mail the person's name to a few of us who have been growing for a little while and see A. if we've ever heard of them, and B. are they trustworthy people. Have you talked to the person? I would make good on my part of any trade regardless of the ultimate outcome from the person I'm trading with. My integrity is worth much more to me than any pumpkin seed.

I have done a few trade and I am always nervous about sending seeds into the US. So far I have send about 100 packs into the US over the last two years and, touch wood have never had the misfortune of loosing seed to the customs boys. I guess if I ever trade a real valuable seed to a US grower, I will find an alternate method of getting it there i.e. drive it across and mail from the other side or, god forbid, get a Phyto sanation certificate! Nothing like playing by the rules.....lol.
PS. there are no issues with seeds coming into Canada.

Mn. Grower, maybe the person you traded with is waiting for your seed also. You know, "who is going to send their seeds first". Do the right thing, keep up your end of the bargain, and if it doesn't work out, find out why. If the results are unsatisfactory, then let others know without using names, unless they e-mail you privately for information. The key to this situation is communication.

hi, being a canadian and having done a fair number of swaps with americans i always tell the other trader to wait till he gets my seed before he sends his out to me because usually there is no problem sending north it,s just when you send south. i,d rather lose my seed than have somebody think i ripped him off. if i,m sending a real expensive seed i get a phyto cert first just for insurance. craig

My Opinion is sending seeds across the border in a trade is like speeding...You know you are doing it and take that risk. The party on the other side has sent his end of the deal, you must follow through on yours.
