What current seed is the closest genetically to the 898?

hey you

Greencastle, PA

the 503 Beauchemin is a remake of the 898 cross, 1007 Brown x 1048 Cox.

There are also some selfed 898s out there as well.

Is the 503 Beauchemin a hard seed to get? I'm thinking of crossing it with the 695 Handy.

The 503 also had no cavity...rock solid

My 826 went 8 percent heavy last year. It had thick, even walls. I selfed the 898. Let me know if you need a seed.

Heck, if you want an 898 cross that is close to the original, I would go with the 1324 beauchemin. It looks like this: 1314(500 Beauchimen X 898 Knauss) 500 Beauchimen (1074 Beauchemin X 898 Knauss) 1074 Beachemin (898 Knauss X 790 Daletas) A LOT OF 898 IN THERE. The 1314 is almost entirely 898.

The 1314 is also 1 of only 2 top 30 all-time pumpkins with no 935 Lloyd in its background. It's in my plans for this year...

The 822 Hester 03 is 695 Handy x 898 Knauss.
It grew the 682 Sherwood last year (33% heavy)

If you were to grow the 503 Beauchemin would you worry it came from a pumpkin with no cavity. Would that be considered a little off? Is that unusual?

Creekside, sorta thinkin that no cavity is a good thing...thick walls, pumpkin flesh heavier than air??? Just a guess. Peace, Wayne

I believe that pumpkin was just too small to have started to develop a cavity every pumpkin Ive seen that size is solid.

I'm planning on growing the 695 Handy. Now, I can see there are some choices to cross with the strong 898 genetics without actually getting the original seed. (for example: 503 Beauchemin (148 Cox x 1007 Brown), 826 (898 x self) and the 1324 Beauchemin (500 Beauchemin x 898 Knauss) What do you see as the best choice between these seeds? What are you looking for at this point?

First i'll make a slight correction:
The solid pumpkin was a beachball size off spring of the
503Beauchemin(898Remake) that i grew in 2004. Not sure what to think? It was very young at the time.
As far as a favorite cross for your 695 i would consider my 1314 from 2005. It is 4 genrations of 898 wrapped up into one seed. Look at what 3 generations did.(500 = 1314.8)
The bottom line is you should consider two factors.
The 695 will produce a large ott measurement pumpkin, (large shell)... The 1314 will give you the thickness. Together the two will add up to a large shelled, thick walled offspring. Just my thoughts...
This is why i originally crossed my first 898 in 2003 with the 790Daletas. (790Daletas had produced the 1245Baily which was considered one of the largest ott pumpkins in 2002) That 898 in 2003 grew my 1074, everything so far from that strain has gone heavy. Something to think about...

Not to nock the 503, but I believe I am the only person to get a pumpkin from the 503 other than Jim, mine weighed 281 (311 est.). It was only like 5 ft. out on the main though. AleX Noel.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. I'm starting to understand this all a little better.

One more question: How do you decide which seed you choose as the female and which you choose to pollinate with? Say for example between the 695 Handy and the 1314 Beauchemin? Do you pick thick skin to pollinate with and large shell to grow the pumpkin?

the best thing to do is cross the two plants both ways (weighs, lol) so, be sure to make 695 X 1314 and 1314 X 695
and, be sure to know ALL ABOUT making a controlled cross
to avoid any contamination from bees or other pollinating insects---if you need details email me.
there is a lot more to genetics than anyone understands
and what has worked for Jim-B might not always work for
everyone else.
so, if you make BOTH crosses and you or others
grow the seeds next year, the results will speak for themselves---with both-way crossing, you at least get the benefit of the doubt--eric

additionally, and for clarification, the main reason for the increases in the WR weight every year almost HAS to come from procedures and ideas like what Jim has done.
when it works, it works! i think, and i am going out on a limb, memory-wise, that the 1048 Cox and the 1007 Brown were both weighed at the same weighoff in Clarence, NY.
soooooo, a fellow named Knauss crossed them and
created one of the most-wanted seeds of all time because of its heft-inducing genes. now, who woulda thought...
well, they WERE in the top 3 at the weighoff, and i think
there was some difficulty in getting any seeds from the 1096.8 Pukos that year. well, i'm done theorizing--carry on.

We had a fruit off the 503 Alex. It weighed 435 and was 12.7% heavy. It also only had 4 mature seeds in it.

That's more what I would expect then. Mine sat in the patch not moving not growing for over a month with a constant fan. AleX Noel.
