Whats the big deal about the 846 Calai ? I've seen these seeds selling for as much as 80 dollars in auctions ? But seed from 1000 pounders were selling for less . What gives?

Seeds from a 1000 lber are not always going to produce.....the 846 was proven in 2000, and most of the 1000 lb seeds are from 2000 and are not proven yet. That is wahat makes the price differential. If you are not a believer of the 846 yet...you will be after the the 2001 year goes bye....it could be the next 935 LLoyd or 946.5 Geerts. The 846 Grew the 1109 Skinner this year...pretty darn big pumpkin!! Plus the 846 can throw out great color like it's mother, the 801.5 Stelts.

Hi Blue!
Case is right! I don't think that there has been a 1000# pumpkin grown from the seed of one 1000# yet. Look at the parents and grandparents of the seed and that will clue you in on what is and could be "hot". The Calai 846# was a beautiful, round, orange pumpkin, which is what a lot of growers are after! I also know that the 846 is becoming extremely rare, there aren't a whole lot out there! Fred Calai grew 3 nice pumpkins in 2000, the biggest weighing 869.5#, trying to obtain seeds from these three will be easier on the pocketbook, and they just might end up being highly sought after in 2002!

P.S. To date, as far as I know, the record price paid for 1 Calai 846# seed is $206.00 (no, it wasn't me, I got mine for $5.00!)
