Hello fellow pumpkin enthusiasts,

This may not exactly fit into the forum topic, but I work in a lab that is interested in why it is that Dill's Atlantic Giants get so giant. We want to examine some of the proteins that are being transported through the phloem in those big ole stems. But to do that, we need some big ole stems.

We actually had a pumpkin patch here at our site last summer, and managed to grow a 186 pounder on our first attempt (which beat my goal of having the pumpkin outweigh me). But this summer, they broke ground on a new greenhouse right on top of our pumpkin patch, so now we need your help.

If you have Atlantic Giant (or other variety) stems in the St. Louis area, or if you have the means to ship them to us frozen in liquid nitrogen, we would love to come get them when you harvest your fruit. We would need to harvest them right at that moment, though, so if you can get in touch before then, we would really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot,
Bert Berla

I'd love to know the results of your work, as would we all. I grow giant pumpkins and have access to liquid nitrogen, but don't live in the St. Louis area. I'm willing to ship some to you, but I don't know how to ship liquid nitrogen without it spilling or evaporating.

How much stem are we talking here? I would suggest a road trip to a weigh off in you area. I am sure if you just need some vine we could leave some extra on.

It was just a matter of time. This pursuit has grown exponentially over the past few years. Along with increased interest within the growing community come those who have a commercial interest. We haven't seen anything yet. Just wait and see what the next five years have in store.
