Hey all,
My fiance and I are just starting out in the world of Giant Pumpking Growing and could use some advice. We live in Western Montana and have no idea what type of seed would be best suited for the area. If anyone has and idea or even better yet is willing to send us some seed to try out we'd greatly appreciate it and be more than happy to let you know how they work. Thanks so much,

Hi

Now hottest seed in world (I think) is 998 Pukos but this is very hard to get.
I saw that this is great producer.
Is much great genetic to plant so you should not have problems with choose.

I would wait untill november to get seed you can get alot of good seeds for free or cheap in november. You don't need the best seeds in the world the first year this is my first year and has been a learning experience for me.

Tracers, the 998 is a very hot seed and will be very hard to come buy unless you are willing to buy it for several hundred dollars at an auction...that said...
After the weigh offs, most growers will offer their seeds for free for the cost of a self addressed stamped bubble pack.
My suggestion would be to come into chat, introduce yourself and start asking any and all questions, most growers will be more then happy to answer and put you in the right direction.
Soon you will have a ton of great knowledge and seeds.

Tracers,

Welcome to the madness. Your life will never be the same. I'm a second year grower and still learning. The best way to start is by doing just what Tom said. The only thing I would add is to spend some time reading diaries and get some idea what kind of pumpkins you want to grow.
Most of all have fun with it.

This is the best place there is for giant pumpkin growing. Keep comming back here, message board, diarys, chat, everything you need to know is here, bigpumpkins. I'm a 1st year person also, still learning new things and yet to see a november here, I think there is a lot of seed action, giveaways, trades. I was given seeds when I asked this spring, All you do is go buy two bubble envelopes, make one out to you, stamped,,put that envelope into the other one made out to the person offering to send you seeds, stamped of course.

Thanks so much for the advice and welcome. I'm really looking forward to the experience and fun. I've had great luck with regular pumpkins and wanted to try for something a bit more exciting. I'll definately keep coming back and checking on what folks have to say. All advice is welcome when trying something new right? Thanks again.

There is a book you can buy, by Don Langevin "How To Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins". There a three editions, they are all vgood. They give you good starting off tips from start to end of season. It'll give you alot of good information, then for the tough stuff, these guy's are the pro's and the best. Book's about 15 or 20 dollars. The year we used the book we went 700#, and better after. Good Luck, it's an up and down hobby, one day you in the clouds and the next your season could be over.

Hi Tracy nice talking to you in chat tonight.welcome aboard.dont forget to always have fun growing these monsters.

you will have your share of heartbreaks along the way,but when you get your first pumpkin to the scales it makes it all worth the while.so take this fall and winter to get your soil straight... get a soil test..read all the post & books you can get your hands on,and ask all the questions you can think of.
best of luck
