He He ! Don't be too hard on Chris, he is a kid trying to grow big. He has lots to learn and wants to get the best seeds that he can. Not the best way to learn perhaps.
He is young and may not understand the etiquette on here.

Chris,
Those seeds you list could be hard to come by. There are a lot of seeds out there with those seeds as parents. Good luck!

Please don't read til November 2nd.........
Hi, My name is Joe, I live in Minnesota.I got into the sport of pumpkins because I have ADD and needed more to do.(This has backfired and I am now cured) I think I know everything and I have purchased all 3 Langevin books and the DVD. I've perused this site and participated in online auctions as well. I've tilled, Amended, Manured, Mulched, Fertilized, Sprayed,Chatted, laughed and cried. I've had successes and failures as well learning all along the way. So, Since you're not reading this until November 2nd pleeeeeeeeeaasssssssseeeeeeee sseennd meeeeeeeeeeeee ssssssseeeeeeeeeeeedddddddddssssss .
Oh, And Tom, Coincidentally I am also starting a mini-seed catalog!!!

I think the point is, that there is nothing wrong with asking for seeds. AT THE RIGHT TIME. Equally there are some seeds that you can ask for that you will never get as a new grower. I am happy with what I have got and what I have bought. I hope to develope with the seeds I have got and also hope to eventually deserve those better seeds.

Bam81, I'd like to hear back from you at this time next year. Because you have no idea what your getting into. Everybody thinks they can grow a 1000 pounder with good seeds.

I just finished my second year growing with out getting a pumpkin to a scale. There are probably 100 different seeds that have producted 1000 pounders. Grow any seed you get your hands on for the first couple years. Learn what your doing before jumping into the 1068, 998 and all the other hot proven seeds.

will not matter what seed you plant, if your soil is not ammended and balanced........spend your time, money and quest for seeds in the patch..........get it ready now for this comming spring..........then this spring get your patch ready to grow big

Milford

milford, CT,

I try not to get involved in stuff like this but this time I feel the need to speak up. I started growing 4 years ago. I asked a longtime grower how can I get good seeds. His response was send out bubble packs every year to the growers you'd like seeds from and include seeds from your own pumpkin and a nice letter of introduction. It has taken me 3 years to collect a nice bunch of seeds but patience paid off.I feel that some of our newer growers want instant gratification. Seeds are a powerful commodity in our hobby and too many seeds end up in the freezer and never grown or are misused to trade for better seeds. I guess my point is that many growers have spent years to get the seeds they want by thinking years ahead before a seed gets "HOT". They had to develop relationships with other growers and gain trust. The best advice I've gotten from the SNGPGA and CTGSPGA growers is learn to be a grower first. If growing a World Record were just throwing good seeds in the ground we'd all be growing 1500 lbers. Sorry for ranting on but I think there are a lot of guys who might feel the same as me and have been rewarded for there patience. I think I would have felt bad if I asked for a 1068 Wallace in my 1st year and grew a 250 lber with it. All I'm saying is that if you want good "FREE" seeds you'll have to earn them. If you choose to "BUY" them the so be it, but many of us growers had to work for the opportunity to grow good seeds.

agreed as well sir i respect the hobby the love hard work an not trying to belittle it just it seems like to me new growers seem to get picked on an im not gonna put up with that either

9/21/2007 9:51:28 PM

Milford

milford, CT,

I agree...truce on the new guys! Just be patient with expectations from your patch. If you send out bubble-packs every year you'll get great seeds before they become unattainable. Try to think 1-2 years ahead and you'll save a lot of money buying seeds from auction. Also if you join some of the growers clubs they offer great seed disbursements amongst club members for about $20 a year...plus great advice.

Think Big

Commack, NY

Ryan,
The sad reality is that the newer guys who are unfortunate in there timing of a request, or are persistant beyond the tolerance of those who need to boost there own ego by putting down others, get picked on. I tip my cap to the few that actually offer constructive advice. They havent lost sight of how it felt to be the "new guy, or gal".

Gheesh, I could care less what seeds chris buys or trades for, I was surprised that after I told Chris that I admired him for not being like the rest of new kids and begging for seeds, and that i was going to load him up with enough seeds that he could start a seed catalog, that he would be trolling for seeds.
Apparently he figures that he can get better....
There was no bashing bam, dont let yer panties bunch up on ya....
I agree, you should get all of the latest and greatest seeds and use them as your test seeds, hell I made the same mistake, most of us did, we are trying to pass on decent advice, wait until you have a year under your belt and you have a little experience...
Scott, there was absolutely no picking on Chris on my part, on the contrary, I have answered all of his growing questions and tried to help him. Ask around, there are a bunch of us that hae been helping the new growers that show a little respect and a will to learn.
I love it when the self righteous know one part of a story and have to comment.
Sooo.....I appologize for airing this in public, this should have ben one via email.

Very sorry Tom....Now I know that I was stupid!!
But I will not use the greatest seed for my test seeds.....This year was my first and I plant no name seeds......or do you know the 404 Riegebauer? I think that I made my first season good and I know that I can grow in my second season a very big pumpkin! Today I cut my pumpkins....I have TWO with about 440 lbs! I Think this is not so bad....and I only had this no names seeds! Next year I don't want to grow ONLY proven seeds...I will plant the 404 again..a 661 Helbock and some others! So I think that I am not now a newby and that I can make some nice and big pumpkins with a little bit better seeds!
I think I am out of the test phase!I understand that you will not send me seeds tom...but please don't think bad aboout me!

Just so all know. Chris sent me some seeds without being asked and he would not allow me to pay for the postage. So his heart is definately in the right place. He is only a youngster but like me is a newbie to growing Ags. In fact he has a year on me! Good luck to him.
