Why would anyone try to go after these seeds if you do not have them, that is, considering you do not have 1000 bucks to drop and more than likely - do not posess the skills and know how to grow them to their full potential? I am sure that most who ask for these seeds consistently in bigpumpkins.com have hundreds, if not thousands, of seeds already in their inventory.

Here is a grand idea, why not be the person to go out and grow an unproven seed? Why not get into Drew Papez' 1068 contest for the 1068 Wallace? The hundreds of seeds in growers inventories over the world are sitting there waiting to be proven. The crosses are top notch, yet because one of the heavy hitters have not grown it yet, it goes "unproven". Be the first on your block to break conventional wisdom and grow an unproven seed. You might find yourself in uncharted waters with one of these hidden beauties. Ron and Dick sent out 5 or 6 different seeds last year with the 1502, the only other one that got planted more than 5 or six times was the 1450. Try one of the other Wallace seed. Joe Pukos, same thing... He is very generous every year with plenty of different stock. Give him a try. What about Larry and Gerry Checkon? His 998 crosses with his 1354 are some to seriously consider. Many many more options out there besides the big 4 or 5 seeds that the top notch growers use. Think about it.

well stated, and never truer words spoken IMO...myself, my goal is simply to achieve better results than I had the previous year...keep to the task, (love, insanity, etc) and hopefully find oneself in the ranks of greatness of the HH's, realize that it will not come without perserverance and diligence...best of luck to everyone in '08..Joe S.

You said it well Mr. Rockwell. I know that I dont have the skills of the better growers, and I also know that I cant spend $1,000 for a seed. So on that note I am going to grow a couple of my own and a few that I already have that I have been tossing around for the last year. Hope everyone has a great Holiday Season and a great 08 season. This is from a guy who has had almost every seed out there, And my PB has come from my own seed. I will be the first to admit, it's easy to get caught up in the search for the Holy Grail, but truth be know, you probably have it. And I've also figured out that just because someone does great with a seed, it doesn,t mean I will.
I truly believe there are 2 new seeds out there that will shine this year but they need to see dirt. The 1068 Papez. How can you go wrong with that, Also the 1296 Kurkowski. The 1296 is a 998 Pukos crossed with my 511(1260 X 1068) that went almost 20% heavy, and produced a pumpkin over 1100. Put that one on paper and look at it.
1296 Kurkowski X 1068 Papez and reverse. One of my crosses for 08

I agree with you Rock and like Eddy I grew my personal best this year from one of our own seeds from 2006 that is a cross that isn't recognized as "great". The genetics of most seeds today are spectacular and just takes good growing techniques, great soil, cooperative weather and a good deal of luck. I feel the most important thing is trusting that the grower made a true protected cross and the seeds used in the cross were legitimate. Other than that I have never met a pumpkin seed I didn't like!

I didnt know what you were talking about....then I looked at the next post. I would say before trying to find a seed like this, the best idea for anyone is to master the art of finishing the season with a fruit.

In my first 2 seasons I've been fortunate enough to prove 6 seeds I take great pride in this and now looking at my '08 lineup I'll plan to grow even more unprovens (takes the pressure off as well,,lol)

I'm not trying to reinvent the genetic wheel here and I personally think that right now we are at the cutting edge with the new crosses available.

I think not that only proven seeds are good seeds. The most breeders believe big names bring big pumpkins. That can be true, but must not.I´m sure it´s easier to produce from an unknown 400lb a 800lb , as from a 1689 a 2000.
Unproven can also help to press the crazy prices from the star seeds,if not all want to have provens.
But probably will never change that tradition..
All the best for 2008

Great post! I agree, there are many great genetic crosses out there. VT John made some good and important points. One seed that could be a sleeper is the 649 Spada 07(1420 Larue X 1502 Wallace). I don't know if there's another cross out there, with a greater combined weight of the two mothers. Will it do as well as the 998 Pukos? Who knows?
I'm sure many a grower would love it if Dan(unkadan) would give their unproven crosses a try.

I have to agree with you to a point rock. I think the key is sending out as many bubbles to the growers you know. More than likely there will be atleast a couple seeds there thst will end up being hot. Get the seeds before there hot is what i say. I have a huge seed inventory and i am in the process of giving some of them away. I have local growers that will more than likely grow them.

I just recieved this seed today and really wasnt paying that much attention that it was even grown this year, I really dont know how I missed it!? As soon as I seen this cross it really got my attention! I really think this is going to be a GREAT unproven seed to grow next year.

I remember last year's frenzy to acquire 1502's and 1068's. While the 998 and 1225 were both highly prized, they weren't nearly as sought after. I'm with you Craig. I already possess seeds with WR potential. Just takes all the right conditions(grower included).

OUR MOTTO HAS ALWAYS BEEN

"IF WE DONT PLANT OUR OWN SEEDS HOW CAN WE EXPECT OTHERS TO?"

HAVING SAID THIS I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE SEED IS ONLY PART OF THE EQUASION.

THE BEST SEED IS WORTH NOTHING IF YOU DONT HAVE THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO CARRY THROUGH FROM GERMINATION TO END OF SEASON

THE BEST SEED IN THE WORLD IS WORTH NOTHING IF YOUR PLANTING IT IN AN INFERIOR GROWING AREA

I have been consistently in the 900 lb range for the last 4 years. I also have grown many top seeds as well as my own. My soil is tested each year and is where it should be and I have had as good of results with my own seed as others. I feel in these pumpkins only a certain percentage of the seeds will do something real good and it is the luck of the draw. How often have we seen a top grower with a top seed get very average or poor results. I spend hours on the aggc and I have found over 100 seeds that I would plant in a heart beat. New growers have never had it so good. When I first started growing in 1996 there was about 10 seeds that were considered worth planting now there must be thousands. Take advantage of it. Matt

Were would we be today if no one ever grew an unproven seed? The truth is, at one time, every seed was unproven. Someday soon, another unproven seed will come along and grow the first 2,000 pound pumpkin. Just like the 1068 Wallace 2003 was the best seed of all times to come along and grow the first 1,500 pumpkin. 998.6 Pukos 2005 grew Jutra's 1,689 in 2007. Now just think if no one took the first step to plant a few of these unproven seeds.

Good point Brian(PumpkinBrat). If Quinn Werner didn't grow the unproven 998 Pukos in 2006(to 1446 lbs.), the 998 may have never caught on.
