Gee, I wonder how much this section of the forum will change when Dill’s Plant Variety Protection Certificate comes off in a couple of years? I was in this other pumpkin forum the other day, and I was going through a few of the older posts. Anyway, someone posted that Dill’s certificate would expire around the middle of 2004.

Howard will always be "THE MAN" We have never sold a single seed as it just wouldn,t be right. Now if Howard or Danny don't have a problem with everyone profiting from their invention after their patent expires, then maybe I will sell my 600# seeds.... No, I can't hardly give them away as it is..;) Best wishes all

That’s cool Gads. Personally, the way I look at it “The Man” paid his fee and now is entitled to whatever protection that a Plant Variety Protection Certificate gives him. But a Plant Variety Protection Certificate is not a patent. The U.S. Department of Agriculture issues Plant Variety Protection Certificates and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issues patents. So do you really think that Dill is covered under a U.S. patent and not a Plant Variety Protection Certificate? Oh, and I’m not always happy with the way the USDA does its business. Oh, and I’m also sure that many folks will be trading and giving away seeds for many more years yet to come.

I have always wondered what was meant by un-authorized propagation? Barbara

If you want to know a little about the PVP Act then go to http://www.nalusda.gov/pgdic/Probe/v2n2/plant.html

Hey Jabba haven't seen you on the boards in a while. How did the season go for you? Are you going to go to the Central Mkt weigh this weekend?
I think 'trade and give away' will remain a staple for normal growers. Seeds for sale will be for highly selective pumpkins and highly selective growers - providing they want it bad enough and they have the funds. Supply and Demand rules apply. Cheers - Ceis

Hiya CEIS, The variety I grew this year was Howden, and I think they did well. I got 11 pumpkins on 5 vines. It would have been more except for the squirrels. I gave away a few to the neighborhood kids and one to my nephew. I really got a kick out of the kids coming over and picking a pumpkin for themselves. I pulled up the vines and cleaned out the patch getting it ready for next year and the BIG ones. Yes, as a matter of fact, I had planned to go to the Central Market weigh off. Are You? Barbara

Hey Barbara - The kids are always fun. Yes I'll be there. Sequoia is coming up too. I'll be in my BP.com T-shirt (weather permitting).
I look forward meeting you. Cheers - Ceis
