Stan,

He probably wants to up his chances, but I think with their climate he would be better off with my 410 from 00, no disrespect intended Kyle it's just that the 410 plant likes the heat, never wilted on 100 degree days, and throws big orange pumpkins. It is listed on this sites free seed list.

Well, I have a couple of seeds (which many of you out there have so kindly and graciously given me to get started on my quest) that would, in my opinion, be excellent matches.
Oh, I live in the Appalachian Mountains which are not too hot in the day, nice and cool at night.

Kyle,
I do not mean to be offensive, but it has been my experience with first year growers that they make so many mistakes their first year that it really doesn't matter what seed they grow that first year!
Lincoln Mettler gave me a 865 and a 974 to grow my first two years. My patch was a disaster of criss-crossed vines and incorrect watering techniques. It was a miracle that I managed to grow a single pumpkin! It was enough to get me hooked on AG's......and the rest is history!

This will be my first year growing also and When I mentioned in the chat room that I would be happy with a 4-500 lbs'er everybody in there asked me why I'm shooting so low and also informed me that a first time grower this year grew a 1100 lbs'er plus this year. so it does happen. no matter how hap hazerdly us Newbies go at it. LOL

Just the same as to Stan happened to me, at least I didn't used good seeds (because there weren't any one in Spain, and I didn't know Internet or good growers). But... I've been in your BEAUTIFUL mountains, in the Great Smokies in 1995 summer, and, of course it was cooler than in Durham NC, but it still was very very hot, muuuuuuuuuuuuch hotter than Spain. We had to walk to the top of the Smokies to get some cool, and nights were warm indeed, as well.

Stan made a very good point alot of new growers have the wrong ideaa that it is all in the seed, the seed is only about 20%of the whole picture. Yes if you gave been a good garden or master gardener and you have read how to grow one and two and you know a heavy hitter or read all you can find on how to grow ag's. Yes there is a chance that a new grower could even grow a world record that is what makes this sport so fun.
But most grower that have grown for a few year will tell that they are still learning. mark

Stan,
I'm not a first year grower, next year will be my fourth. I have previously grown a (estimated) 550 and 620, both went down from splits. I have made many mistakes and believe I've learned enough to successfully compete (hopefully) next year. I have grown fron Dill stock up until now and I have spent the last 2 years quietly studying and listening to others regarding genetics and matches. I think I've found some "sleeper" seed that could take off with the right matches, that's all. As far as rookie mistakes, been there, haven't done ALL that, but ready to move on to another level. THAT'S why I am looking for the 801.5 Stelts.

Here's a hint but not my only option for crosses....
What seed has the 801.5 as the mom, should be easy.
I don't worry about criticism and welcome constructive suggestions.
You guys might be surprised what may come out of Tennessee before too long.

Kyle I got the following info from the AGGC & should help you find a seed with a LOT of 801.5 in it.
I'll use the 1105 Stucker as a example, The female of the 1105 was the 846 Calai which had the 801.5 as a female.
The Calai 846 which produced the 1105 was crossed with the 801.5,
So the 1105 has the 801.5 on the male side 1 generation back & the 801.5 on the female side 2 generations back.
Other seeds with this same basic 801.5 crossback are
1053.5 Stelts
884 Calai
869.5 Calai
681 Hester
I hope this helps a little............Paul

No, haven't got it yet. Also have another option where 801.5 is back 2 generations on the mother's side and 1 generation on the father's side. Still more options out there!
C'mon ya'll.

Mike Nepereny put another query on for me yesterday ( crossback II ) on this one the pollinator of the seed being grown is the same as the pollinator of this years cross. And 1 seed that has the 801.5 in this manner is the Kilbert 440........

Kyle..It looks like some of us more southern boys are gonna half to show these guys that a large pumpkin can come from the South next year. hehe

Actually they have been alot of big pumpkins growned in the South. They just aren't publicsize as much as the ones growned in the north.

Back to your question way up there.....no Southeastern 1000 pounder that I know of yet. The records listed from what I would call the south east on http://www.backyardgardener.com/record.html are as follows:

VA: 823
NC: 856
SC: None
FL: 610
TN: 716
MS: None
AL: 401.5
AR: None

So I guess we are still waiting for our first 900 lber. I'll go ahead and make a prediction now. The GA record will fall in 2003 and so will the VA record. Though some might dispute the new VA record because any true southern knows that VA starts at Richmond and the place they call "Herndon, VA" is really part of MD or maybe DC:)
