The 455 Andrews was planted by many growers in 2002 as a friendly competition among growers. All season I was wishing I would have gotten in on it. Anyhow, I was wondering if everyone is looking at a 2003 competition seed? By the way who won 2002?

Well first, what seed do we all have????

I would think that if we took a vote on it, then let the grower know of our plans that he would love to have his seed widely planteed. As long as its not an 846, 845 or another VERY hot seed there should be plenty of supply to meet our demand.

Maybe the 310 eisenhaur, I think some people have that one? It also has good genetics...

Sounds like there is some interest out there!!!! GREAT... would be a blast. And I see we already have some seed offers. What was Kens 840 cross? And Bill V. what was yours Someone mentioned the 310.....846 x self right? So far id have to say I like Hoppy's 705.6. I would need to run it past him, and maybe I should have before I mentioned it, but what about the 804 Carlson. It is 846 x self and there was two on the plant....went pretty heavy also...! Nice fruit, I seen it in person! Anyhow, anyone interested please give some feedback. As far as rules...we can vote on those also. Maybe a prize..... Maybe someone would be willing to put up a nice seed??? Just an Idea. Anyhow, I would be happy to try to organize this if that is what we want.... And if so, SURE Steve i'll take some help! I just thought it was a really neet thing some of you did last year and I think it could be a great BP.com tradition!! I'll check back here on Sunday, Mike

I will supply one of my 801.5 x 974 Mettler crosses if you want.

Dependin on the number of poeple, I will supply one of my 801.5 x 876.5 Crosses....if there are less than 50. I have quite a bit fewer of that cross is why I would have to put a limit on it.

Mike I would say Pappy won the 455.4 andrews 2002 weigh off. Reasons being he was the grower that folloewed the rules by posting the results every week in how his 455.4 was doing. I even didn't follow the rules of the contest and I was the guy who thought it up.
The reasons I wanted the weigh off wasn't for who grew the biggest fruit but to see if climate, expereince, soil, ect made a difference in how the seed would preform and from thant maybe get some ideas to help better ourselves in up coming years.
Its up to you Mike its your baby this year in how the weigh off is run but remember in the middle of the summer its hard to make posts every week, secound do we all want to grow a seed that might turn out to be a dog even if it looks good on paper it might not grow a nice pumpkin. Idea maybe look back 2001 seeds 310 707 960 1062 just some ideas they have all grown some pumpkins in the 900 lb range.
Best of luck mark

I think Bill's Pumpkin the 770 seeds would be great. I think it is 845Bobier X 945 Van. The 945 Van is an aggressive plant and I know Bills offspring from the 945 went about 8-9% over the charts.

How about g's 455 again?????? or the 310, it produced some big ones, might wanna try it and prove seeds from small pumpkins can go BIG!!!!!!!!!

Wow, im glad to see that the interest is growing here!!! I like many of the ideas sugested and I really like what Farmer Scott said about Ken's 840. I know Ken and his BP.com have changed my life bigtime. I think that in a couple of days, after everyone has had a chance to offer seeds, opinions and what not we should have a vote. Also I see Marks opinion on growing a more proven seed. Maybe everyone would like to go into this with a little better odds???? Good idea Mark! I for one like to play on the riskey side of things. I like to "prove" a seed, LOL. Anyhow, I think we should sit on this and collect some ideas for a couple of days, then we should have a vote. Anyone.......??????

12/8/2002 12:28:50 PM

Steveman

colorado

I agree Mike, but I think the 455 would be a good idea again for it is proven and I think most of us have it... The 310 eisenhaur is the 846 x self, good genetics and I think we tried to get that seed.. but when you combine the 455 with the 846 we would sort of be combining the 455 and 310, so why not the 617 andrews if g can part with some for us?????? If not I would like it if we tried Tom Beachy's cross......Any thoughts Mike?????????????

How would the 455 do if it was grown against its self the 455 x 455 in the same patch? By the same grower. Which would produce the biggest pumpkin.
Just an interesting thought.

Hey : Guy's ; all things aside ; all the particments in contest must be happy with what they are growing or they will not give it there best shot. So I suggest, find the seed that will produce the most amount of growers & go with that one. It will give the most fun to the majority & that is the name of the game. My offer will remain open but remember, the more growers the more fun. Mike; I'm only trying to be helpful. Poppy

I have more 840's if you want to try that one. It is an 805 Pukos selfed. See the pics in my diary. The stem end was 14 inches thick!

The worst part is that I won't be in it! I am sitting out next season. My wife is due with our second son in April.

No one has commented on it and maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looks like steve(3) is offering a 845 to the winner using his 803.4. Can't beat that for a prize. Of course I'm not sure I can fit anything extra in my patch but winning an 845 is intriguing. Of course Ken has some nice seed too...how about the 6?? (805x712)

Okay everyone, it looks like we have a big croud willing to participate in this...WOOO HOOO! This should be fun. Also we have many generous offers for some really GREAT seeds! Thanks a bunch to everyone who offered some up. I really think this would make a great BP.com tradition, so we need to come up with some ideas on rules and what not. Im going to go start a new thread just for ideas. Unless you fell that someone else would be better to organise this, Ill be more than happy to do it. Im going to bring SteveMan along for the ride because ill surely need some help. Lets all try to come up with some ground rules and Ideas (post on new thread) and then after everyone has had Time to pick which seed they like Steve and I will start taking votes. Sound good??? I think the best bet would be the 707 Toftness...846Calai x 723Bobier from ' 01. It was on the BP seed page so many have it. Its proven to be worthy as Hoppy got over 700 on it last summer and NY Randy+Deb had 700 plus on thiers...it produces orange fruit of good shape. Its largely ungrown yet its produced well when it was grown. And how could you beat the 846 and 723 as parents?....That would be my choice.......G

Guys..Why not have a contest for any BP.com member that would throw 10 bucks in a pot and let them grow any seed they choose? I think that would be of a more fair and honest way of working the contest.
