To anyone who does not know, the group here at BP.com is having a friendly competition in 2003. Many of us will be growing seeds from the SAME pumpkin to see who can do the best with it! Anyone is welcome to join, and the seeds will be made available sometime soon. In addition to braging rights and good old-fashion fun, Steve(3) has generously offered an 845 Bobier as a prize to the winner, THANKS STEVE! Seed votes are being accepted through 6pm central standard time this Saturday. Your vote must be E-mailed to Me or Steveman to be counted. To see a list of the seeds that are available, please review the post below " BP 2003 Competition Seed Vote". Thanks and good luck to everyone! Mike/ Steve

With a little more than 6 hours to go, Ken's 840 is in first place. We have a three way tie fighting for second. Tom Beachy's 801.5 x 974 cross, the 537 Hildebrand and the 803.4 Davies. As it is, it would take 10 votes to catch first place. Can they do it, or is it over?!!!!!! Only time will tell.....We should have the results posted tonight or on Sunday. Mike

sorry.....The Winner is the 840 Desrosiers!!! Congrats Ken! The 840 had more than twice the votes as second place. FYI second place was Tom Beachy's 801.5 x 974 cross and 3rd place is 537 Hildebrand. AS a first place prize, Steve Davies will be providing an 845 Bobier and BigPumpkins.com is giving a one of a kind sweatshirt. Boily (Ben Boyton) one of our over seas growers is currently growing an 845 Bobier and is selfing it. If it produces, he has offered 20 of it's seeds to our prize package. In addition, Steve and I are in the process of contacting some Heavy Hitters to round up a few more donations. If all goes well, id like to develop a first, second and maybe a third place prize package. Anyone wishing to make a donation please let us know. Lets make this a wonderful start to what can be a great BP.com tradition! Mike/Steve

When growing in this fun compitition are we going to be aloud to cross polinate or does it have to be self polinated?

You can pollinate with whatever you want! The pollinating plant will have no size affect on the pumpkin your growing on the 840.

Walcott, here is a good way to help raise the prize money. Everyone who is going to grow the 840, has to enter with a $5.00 or $ 10.00 fee to register. sounds great to me.

I will be adding more in January too, so don't worry if you didn't get a pack of 840's yet. I only packaged up 200 seeds (100 packs of 2) so far.

I might have missed it, but if our friends in Australia also compete in this contest, will you have to wait until their growing season is over? We start in April, they finish the next April (I think). Just curious.

I think all entries will need to be weighed or measured between Jan 1st 2003 and November 1st 2003....This should cover almost everyone. Any opinions? Mike

Hey if Boily is pollenating flowers 17 feet out on the vine now and has 90 days of fruit time...he'll be done mid march and we can test his seeds like he's testing the Koch now! Don't see how we can get northern and southern hemispheres on track without picking a seed and someone waiting a year!! Any ideas Boily and DU!

My season begins in mid October and ends in April, so I think that rules us Australian's and New Zealander's out of the contest. You guys wouldn't wait 6 months to see if we bettered your efforts with the chosen seed(840)But thanks Dave and Chuck for thinking of us..... Maybe I could build a huge heated hothouse and grow at the same time...... not unless I win the lottery.....LOL. If any of you want to test some Australian seeds, let me know and I will be able to send them over in time for planting.....like Clancy, Case, Pumpkinpal, David G and Randoo did.(Sorry I couldn't plant em all) If your after seeds with heat resistance the offspring from my plants might have it. Especially from the 845 plant. It hardly wilts at all and we are getting 100F every second day here and up to 115F some days. Its offspring may have even better heat tolerance???
