You're beginning to crack Brooks. Worst case of cabin fever I ever saw. Maybe you need to get a summer place "down under".

I only sent out a few bubbles this year because I didn't want to get too many secrets. Brooks, I know you're new here but you really need to settle down and stop hoarding secrets. I really think you should send back the extra secrets you requested. lol funny post brooks.

Ok Brooks here's a secret I've been holding for awhile. Forget the compost tea I believe in Sun tea. During the growing season I'll consume 1 gallon of sun tea mixed with 16oz. of Jim Beam. At the end of the day your pumpkins may not be any better but you really won't care.

No problem Frank really what we think are secrets end up being the most basic things. In my case leveling my soil numbers and getting soil in balance. If we listen to growers well enough you will see secrets are simple to find!

Brooks, I'm getting a little Zen here, but what did you do in 2007 that was different from 08 or 09. Was it a Joe Pukos seed, was it weather, was it fate? I don't think luck produces a 1400 lb'er. Get back in the zone brother, you put in the time, you have the genetics. I remember your 2007 posts, I think you grew 3 over 1000 that year. You and your father seemed to be having a great time. Get back in that place buddy, 1500 awaits you!

I'm going to repost what swaintech posted in one of pap's recent threads:

"I learned the hard way about the "excess". After 22 years of growing AG I had my pb of 1119 Swain 08 from a Holland 936 07 (1086 Holland X 998 Pukos). I did not really add much to the soil and was pleasantly surprised to see such a big beautiful pumpkin (site search swaintech "the lineup") with minimal work!.

So this past year I decided to "go big" and added ALL the amendements from the soil test along with myc. fungi, kelp, gypsum etc. recommended on this site. After spending alot of $ and time, I ended up with my biggest at around 375 lbs. Yes, the weather in the northeast was cool and wet but Alan Nesbitt and Joe Pukos did well.

So now I'm not sure if it was the weather or the excess but will go back to limited amendments next year."

Could it be your doing too much of something? I read somewhere on here that foaming stumps could be the result of some sort of excess, and I remember you saying something about having no shortage of foamers.

Sure wish I knew that answer Andy,,lol,, 2008 I let everything pretty much grow on its own, thats the year Dad was going through kemo so I never really did much in my patch, and patch looked like a twisted mess of vines,,lol. Very depressing looking out the window at a 1450 and a 1068 Wallace plant all twisted together and growing up the side of my wind fence,,lol.
I had alot of great proven seed planted that year that only thing I really did was pollination's. Just couldn't find the time to really get into it that year.

But 2009 I did give her hell again, but then was losing stumps like crazy,,,lost close to 70% to 80% of my stumps to Mr Foamy. I emailed the hell out of Ron Wallace, Dave Stelts, Quinn and a few other great growers close to me from end of July to September to see what I could do about the foamers, but since I never really had a massive problem like that before with the foamers and I wasn't at all familiar with them and what to do that the season was pretty much over for me when my pumpkins hit 30 to 40 days of their growth cycle due to Mr Foamy showing up.

And as most of you guys know, most of your work is completed when your pumpkin hits that 30 to 40 day mark, you have alot of work in for sure espically if your growing 8 to 10 plants,,, vines are buried, pumpkin is set and then Mr foamy shows up. It sure does take alot of wind out of your sails about growing that big one thats for sure.

I really hope I can get back on track this year, I have been talking with Ron Wallace on a plan for me on these foamers and think I have a great chance to over come them now, well Im hoping anyway,, lots of new things Im going to try, and Ron to, that might help alot of growers in the future to over come these foamers. Lots of trial and error for me this year.

And Ill take a cyber beer! ha!

PumpkinCholo - thanks for the response - no, I have never had a "foamer" in my 22 years of growing but something is wrong. I had truck loads of leaves dumped on my growing area and could have messed up my percentages - I will have a soil test done in the spring.
