How do you enter contests in your area and where would you look to find out who is sponsering them. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and would love to enter a pumpkin growing contest. I am disabled and gardening has become my major hobby. Someone is sending me seeds. Not to sound stupid but I am new and wanted to know what "uow" stands for? Is anyone from AZ on the website???

Yo AZ - I think you are going to have a very hard time finding an event there in AZ. If you have the fortitude you could stage your own official weigh-off.
Not too many pumpkin growers down there. Seems to be too darn hot. I grew up in Tucson so I know how HOT it can get down there. You'll probably have to adjust your growing cycle to the climate. I'd start as soon as you get your seed.
You could be the next state record holder. I believe that the current record is only 51.5 pounds. Some guy in Gilbert has the record.
UOW is "unofficial weight. - See the other thread on the General discussion board.
Good Luck and Grow 'EM BIG. Ceis

51.5 pounds is the Arizona state record. I am going to beat that. My pumpkins last year were pretty big and that was from the smaller pumpkin seeds. I can't wait to get my seeds and get started.

With a positive attitude like that, it seems success is in your future AZ. Misting would probably help a lot. Check in the "how to" section for advise from Anderson in CA. He grew a monster his first year in very high temps. See also Boily-Ben's diary.

I'll check both of those. I have started a word document with all of the info people have given me. Thanks,

The article you need to read is on misting by Scott Armstrong. You will also need to shade your plants. We get hot weather in the central valley of CA but not like the desert. Good Luck. Suzy
