I'm about 25 minutes south of Pittsburgh and I have never grown a pumpkin before. My kids want to grow some big ones to be ready for halloween. Where do I get big pumpkin seeds, and do i have a prayer of getting them to grow even though i have little experience? What do I need?
Thanks CJ

CJ, prbly about the right time to start one where you live. Several questions need to be addressed to answer your 1st question. Any gardening experience? Do you have a spot prepared? (prbly at least 400 sq. ft, but can be done in less). Have you been reading here on bp.com about how to sprout seeds, what kind of care is needed, etc? Most important, are you ready to enter the insanity of giant pkn growing?!!! Regardless of the answers, (but hopefully they are all yesses) I will send ya some seeds, if ya want em. Send email to wsmpeace@bellsouth.net Peace, Wayne

Hi CJ,
If you want some world class seeds go to www.howarddill.com and order some. Start them indoors in 4" peat pots in a warm area (80 to 90 degrees works great), your oven with just the light on will get around 85 degrees. You dont need a huge area if you just want some big jack o lanters.
Welcome aboard, jump in and have fun!

FWIW - and I really like Dill's site - it does take several weeks to receive the seeds, which would delay fruit production a bit.

Has this soil been amended for gardening? Lime, manure, compost amendments etc? Have you grown vegetables before? How much space length x width? 100 lbs+ is easy but over 500 will take about 500 sq ft and several hours per week minimum. 1000 lbs could take 1-2 hours per day.
We need to establish the site suitability as well as your commitment. LOL
