hello
i am an uk allotment grower.

garlic is very cheap and easy to grow..
they all say to purchase bulbs from repitable growers etc.

buy a couple of garlic bulbs from a grocery store peal and remove outer layer open it up and it has approximate six segments break into indiviual segments and plant each segment in the fall approximate 6in apart and 12in between rows.

What variety are you looking for? Hit a farmers market and choose what you like..

Today I just bought "Musik" and Spanish Roja, and with shipping it came to almost $40! I've been growing garlic for a number of years, and just wanted to try new varieties. The good news is that if you manage your crop, you can save some each year and continue on. This year my stocks are way down... the crop was very bad. But in future years we should get together and trade varieties.

Growing garlic from the grocery store should work fine. The only drawback might be in the varieties you can find.

I grow about 400 pounds a year and sell at the local farmer's market. I'm nearly sold out for the year but I do have some Music left, and possibly a few bulbs of Siberian.
What I have left are smaller to medium sized bulbs. At the last farmer's market I put my stock on sale to clear it out for $8 per pound which is a 20% discount. All of my original seed garlic was purchased from reputable sellers "Filaree and seedsavers".
If'n your intersted get in touch, your a member at the greenhouse which is the easiest way to get in touch with me.

Your local Farmer's market would be the best place to buy stock provided your seller knows what he's got, many do not.

On store bought garlic. ALL grocery stores in this area sell only garlic grown in the garlic capital of the World, "China". That garlic is a softneck variety, not nearly as flavorful as the hardnecks you find online. You have a 50/50 chance of it growing for you, since a majority of those producers spray the bulbs with a sprouting inhibitor to increase shelf life.
