Just curious if it is common or not for seeds to be damaged or broken in transit in the mail?

I sent some seeds to someone who said that they were damaged when the arrived despite being packed in a bubble pack.....just bad luck?

I have not had that happen, but as with any mail, I could see it happening depending on the postal workers in that area. I have gotten cards before all smashed up, so I could see seeds getting damaged.

can definitely happen - I had a few giant sunflower seeds get smashed up last year and I remember reading some threads about it last year when someone received their auction seed smashed. If shipping a rare or high dollar value seed it might be worth placing in a small hard plastic case with some padding for extra safety - (I think the damage on mine was from them sending it through the automatic sorting machine as it had several wheel like markings on the outside of the bubble also - if it is a bit thicker than the machine is set to handle it can crush the contents which I think is why anything thicker than 3/4 inches is sent as a package instead of a letter and they charge higher postage since they are sorted manually.)

Over the years I have recieved a damaged 998pukos (hurts),1010MacKenzie and 1092Burke, a cracked in half 940Mombert00, and a pulverized 1233 Reiss....thats off the top of my head. It happens. I especially liked the bubble that came with a perfect vibram sole imprint on it.

Kids, it hurts me when I hear bubbles are damaged in transit. When I'm not growing AGs, I work for the USPS as a letter carrier. I have yet to see any damaged bubbles come my way, but I know that happens.

Certain processing plants in the USA seem to be prone to "accidents" than others, and a lot of it probably is due to machinery.

Auctions should give us the option how to ship. If it means safer shipping, I'm willing to spend more.

I know when I get my first damaged bubble, I'm shipping UPS or FedEx. Quality seeds deserve quality shipping.

Last year, I received an envelope full of sunflower seed powder...normal letter envelope w/ 1 stamp on it!!! I knew what was going to be inside when I first saw it!!! LOL NSB...sorta not, common...but does happen, even w/ the best of care!! Peace, Wayne
PS..VT, is there a list of these "more prone to accident" postal locations?

Wayne, I've noticed packages from NYC and Miami are often in rough shape. I'll start taking notes and let you know how packages to Vermont from various cities fare this holiday season.

There's probably not a lot of growers in NYC or Miami anyway, right?:-)
