Folks-I realize this may not be the best particular message board for this simple question, but I noticed there were recent posts so I knew there'd be experts around!
I have searched this site for nomenclature definitions, but I can't get past the very simple question: What do the number and name refer to?? From the recent posts, for example, what is a 1180 Pukos? A 1610 Leiber? Is it simply the weight of the pumpkin that gave rise to the seeds, and the name is the grower? Is that all there is to it? So, to get a 1236 Harp I contact Mr or Mrs Harp with a self addressed bubble envelope and a polite request? And how does one get a 1610 Leiber to trade to someone if they themselves aren't Mr or Mrs. Leiber? Or are seeds from a 1610 Leiber all called 1610 Leiber if they are from a self pollinated plant started from a 1610 Leiber? Sorry for such a naive question! I can figure out what the crosses mean, if I can get past this!

You are correct in the naming -- ie. 1610 Leiber would be the 1610 LB. pumpkin that Mr(s) Leiber grew Usually followed by the year it was grown and also listing the female and male that were crossed to grow it.

AS for how to get the seed - there are several methods - as you mention getting it directly from the grower - in a distribution from the club that they are affiliated with in the seed packet that most send out as part of registering with them as a member - purchasing from an auction (either for a charitable cause or fund raising event for one of the clubs used for the Prize pool at weigh-offs) etc.

So once others have received the seed from one or more of those methods there are at times people who have the seed with no intention of growing it so many times you can find them for trade for another seed that he has contributed to other growers and other causes so getting one direct from them is not always possible (esp. if the seed has been proven to grow other big pumpkins so many growers are seeking it.)
