I have searched high and low and have found what seems to be some of last "Melonie" cucumber seeds that won the record for length in 2010 by a grandmother in England. I have some costs to get these so they will be $5.00 per packet(plus $1.00 regular mail postage) and can be seen on my diary for 2012 -pete There are now 2 left....

Looks like you got ripped off. The record for length was not won by a grandmother in England in 2010 or any year for that matter. The record length cucumbers are (origninally) open pollinated "Telegraphs" and the various records have been held by either Alf Cobb (a 90 year old plus gentlemen in England) and Ian Neale (a gentleman from Wales) for many, many years.

What you are referring to is an English gentleman that got disqualified at the major giant vegetable show in England in 2010 with a "Melonie" cucumber and then got Guinness to record it anyways.

In 2010 a grandmother broke the "previous" record of 118cm, but the previous record (from Israel) was also disqualified (even by Guinness) as it was not a cucumber but a (yeard long) melon.

The question is if Melonie is actually a cucumber. Its name, taste and colouring suggests it isn't and English shows will not accept them. According to the seed producer (Unwins) they are cucumis sativus, which is the latin name for the cucumber family. Some day we will have to get this one figured out, but as of now, no major show will/should accept them.

I can't speak for anyone else but I read it as pumpkin-eater got ripped off, not that pumpkin eater was ripping people off. (if someone sold you 5 packs of seeds that arent what they are supposed to be then you got ripped off pumpkin-eater).......thats how I read it.

here is the link to guinness world records website where it very clearly states that the world record is held by Clare Pearce. What kind of cucumber was it? It was grown from a "MELONIE" cucumber seed. What more needs to be said? Seriously........

I understand Clare Pearce is in the Guinness Book, but so is Piet de Goede with a 171 lb table beet. It was a sugar beet. The world's longest cucumber was a so-called Yard Long Cucumber. It isn't even a member of the cucumber family. It is a melon. The world's largest potato was a sweet potato, which is no relation to a potato whatsoever.
You have to remember, Guinness people are not botanists or even experienced in the field of gardening. Too many times they ignore their own rules and accept entries that are not what they think they are. And none of they "cucumber" record specimens ever made it to an official show...

The EGVGA has a group of experts and we are looking into the matter. We will give the seeds a shot as they seem to be readily available still. The seed producers themselves have discontinued the type.

In any case, they are probably a hoot to grow, so why not give them a shot.

Well after a lot of research and looking at dozens of pictures of all kinds of wild and cultivated cucumbers and melons, I finally found what is probably the two parents of the "Melonie".

All cucumbers have prickles in some shape or form. These have been (almost) cultivated out of several "English" types. The "Melonie" has no prickles. Its taste, shape, colouring and lack of prickles directed my search to the Melon Cucumber family of cucumis melo flexuosus. These are not cucumbers at all, but true melons. After a bit of looking I found several cultivars that were almost identical to the Melonie. Two in particular caught my eye. One had the same shape and length with light markings. The other had an identical colouring.

Then I saw that some seed companies incorrectly sold these as cucumis sativus and the story was complete.

"Melonie" is almost certainly not a cucumber, but a melon. Guinness should have done its homework.

i got some telegraph seeds im gonna try this year,they looked the best out of all the cucumbers i saw pics of,i might grow the melonie but just for fun,next year i wont fall asleep before the auctions lol thanks pizza
