Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

I'm really just wondering. I have space for six next year, and I'm going to use 3 slots from my pumpkins this year. I will be attending the auctions for the first time and was wondering what to expect? Never been to one before. Are we talking hundreds of dollars for 1 seed? My main reason for asking is because I sell my pumpkins every year. I am going to include the 'biggish' guys I grew this year, but if seeds are so expensive that I can't afford them I will figure out a way to get my seeds back from people who buy the fruits. Kinda planning ahead I guess...I don't want to let all my seeds go only to find out that the big guys on here seeds' are so expensive I can't afford them. I realize it will depend on what kind, but could someone give me an idea of what a 1000 pound and up pumpkin seed will go for based on previous years auctions?

Set a limit and don't go over it. Maybe buy a few to benefit clubs etc, but also many big growers will always give for free if you ask. I have got many from 1200 plus for free, but also bought from a clubs to help with costs.

:-) Good news: You don´t need to pay any dollar for a good seed, you simply need to wait and see which seeds you would like to grow, and then you simply contact the grower (email) and ask if you might receive one of the seeds (at the cost of a self addressed stamped bubble)...of course, the grower doesn´t mind if you include a little $$ note for his/her next season´s expenses.

Proven seeds (like the 1789 Wallace, 1161 Rodonis, 1725 Harp, 1634 Werner) will have to be obtained through auctions or trading with other growers, because their producers most likely ran out of those seeds already, but new seeds of excellent crosses should be available to you and to other interested growers for free.

Auctions are the right place to obtain some of the most sought after seeds and to support clubs with the money you pay for the seeds, but you can obtain precious seeds for less money.

As stated before on here , you`ll be able to get some really good crosses for the cost of a SASBP later on from some great growers .

I usually try to support several clubs if they have a seed I`m interested in . Its a win win . You get the seed you want and helps the club out .

Its supply and demand on the seeds that creates the price. The seed from the worlds heaviest and the seed that it was grown from sets the bar for that season. So right now that would be 2009 wallace/2328 meier. Any seed out of the top five grown -and their producer will fetch high prices .After that the demand drops significantly. My seeds will be free again cause demand is low.The actual prices fetched at auction is half the fun.

Thanks all, I appreciate the info!!!
So m y favorites from having watched the diaries over the season are:
Sparky's 1281.5 Holland, that thing was gorgeous and huge at DAP 64....385OTT!!
Also his 1294 Westernvelt that one was 352 at DAP 64.
AGteachers 1640WOLF crossed with 1630CHECKON
and Countryboy's 1024 SPEAKMAN.
I'm still in a toss up as to which squash to try for to go with my Green monster seed.

As to squash, a 89* Shymanski seems to be a fine thing, have read only good things about this seed so far.

I wanted to come some kind of bad, unfourtunately my biggest is going to be just shy of 350 pounds this year....next year I intend to come over them grinning like a fool!!! I will definitely look to joining NCGVG.
Josh- were any of the 89's orangey? My Bell is dead emerald green and she is selfed, we can trade if you want, but I'm trying to stick close as I can to a true greeney! I still can some of bells seeds to you though if you want. I will email you.
Sparcmat- You betchya, I have a column for 'plant issues' where I have listed any problems/issues they had over the season next to the ones I have been adding to my watch list.

LB - I grew the 89 last season in Australia, it ended up weighing 695 lbs ( UOW ), just 31 lbs short of the Australian squash record. I think there is a pic in my diary, but will add another. I will be growing 1 or 2 89's this season, 1 seed will go into the dirt tomorrow . I think the 89 has WR potential for sure. If you want more info about it or more pics just send me an e mail. Pipster- Boy, it sure is a pretty Blue-green!!! I went and looked at the pic in your diary. I'll email you in a bit with some questions about the plant its self. Thank you!!
Zepfan- Thanks so much for your offer! Next year I am going to make it a point to travel to pine tops and see how one of the experts does this!!! I won't be able to come to elkin this year, just too much going on between my work and sale ring. I will email you though shortly, I'd love to try some 'real' seed next year. Although, I gotta say, 300 pounds may not be big to many.....but it's the biggest thing I ever grew!!! LOL
