When you send a SASE envelope with the proper postage or money; how do you feel when someone sends you back 1 or 2 seeds that are from a really small pumpkin or squash that are not from a known grower? Or from that grower only from their smallest pumpkin that they ever grew?
Do you appreciate what you get or do you wonder if that person just wanted the money for the postage? Or do you feel that you are rated by what you have grown already. If you grew a big one already would you have gotten better seeds?
Do you feel like you wasted your money on the envelope, etc?
Do you expect more?
What do you expect when you send out SASE to known growers?
Or are you just thankful for what you get?
What can you expect from sending someone a SASE?
Just Curious;

I would assume that most of his good seeds were gone and he/she gave you what he/she could. I guess, if I hadn't paid anything for any specific seed, only postage, I would be happy that I was sent anything. Just my opinion

Coger did you contact this grow previuosly and let them know what you are looking for? Or did you send a unsolicated self addressed stamped envelope with no note. The correct way to do it is to send a self addressed stamped bubble pack. With a note explaining who you are, what crosses you liked of theirs, how long you have been growing, and a little bit about yourself.
A lot of time is involved in these bubble pacs, and the known growers receive hundreds of unsolicitated requests. I think you should be happy you received something back. Be happy that the SASE did not end up in the trash. If you were expecting some hot seed, sorry.
Now on a brighter note tell us what seed you are looking for, the pumpkin growing community is a very friendly bunch.
Better yet join your local group. The Ohio Valley Pumpkin Growers(some of the best growers in the world), attend a meeting and I am sure you will have more seeds than you will ever be able to plant. Shannon

Give me a break codger "just wanted money for postage", "rated for what you have grown", either you are expecting to much from your requests, or you have no idea of what seed requests are all about. Sending a request in my eyes is asking for, commiting to, and trying out the growers cross. Many growers send less than their best genetics to folks that they know won't grow their seeds in the first place.

If there is one area where growers can get their feelings hurt, it is this area of seed requests. All I can say is...."Be patient and long-suffering with your fellow growers".
Last week, I received a phone call from a "very heavy hitter" asking why I had not responded to his seed requests for the passed year. I stated that I had not received his seeds or requests!! Needless to say, I sent him seed from my last three years pumpkins.
So my fellow growers, be patient with one another.

sending out a request does not put the grower receiving the request under any obligation....here is a tip....send e-mail first .....most e-mail addresses are avaiable on the AGGC member list......request the seed or seeds you would like....wait for return e-mail....usually you will know from the response.....include 1.00 or 2.00 for postage.....not a large amount for their trouble...don't send bubble-pacs to Canada with USA postage.....doesn't work.....alot easier if the grower puts the postage on...up here bubble-pacs are weighed....postage can vary...Coger if you want a few seeds e-mail me and I have lots to offer....

Good explanation Wayne. That's what I always do. If I don't receive a response, I don't worry about it. Some people distribute seeds differently, or get hundreds of requests and it's too much for them to handle. I don't think it's ever anything personal. There are a bunch of good seeds out there. Many will be available at this site and many are at seedoutlet.com.

I always send email previously to the person requesting the SASE seeds and I am told what to expect back. I wouldn't send out anything to anyone unexpectantly. I always write a note explaining exactly what we had discussed and enclose the note in the envelope. I thank the person for the seeds. I let them know that the seeds are appreciated.
I would be HAPPY with a seed from a pumpkin from "556.2 or 756.5 02" even less than that. I think everyone would. Congratulations on such a great first year.
I didn't mean to raise hairs I was just curious on what people expect from SASE exchanges. I also have checked out the www.seedoutlet.com site and agree it is a very good idea. I also agree with the bigpumpkins.com seeds. They also have great seeds available at times.
I was just curious.

If I send you some dinky pumpkin or squash seeds that look like crap for all you can tell, you better plant them because I probably just sent you the best seeds in the world.

hehe

Nic Welty

p.s. if anyone sent me a request, I will try to get to them sometime when I am home from school again. I will never run out of great seeds to give away for free

Nic, do your school work and spend the holydays with your family, there´s no matter for hurry, next growing season is far away.

Everybody who´s knowing you, knows about your generosity.
