How old can a seed be and still produce a good plant and pumpkin. Were there any seeds planted before say 1998 this year. if so any success?

My 625.4 this year was grown on a 631 Kuhn 1995 seed. As long as they are properly dried and stored they can last up to 6 or 7 years (maybe longer).

Should the storage be an air tight container?

Many people around the world store seeds in glass jars, they are pest proof.

No Duff...the green seeds dont last as long....the orange ones get the freezer space while the green ones get the sock drawer........G

I read somewhere that in general a group of seeds
will lose 10% viability each year.
ie-
1st year 90% will germinate
2nd year 80% will germinate
3rd year 70% will germinate
4th year 60% will germinate
etc...
but my limited experience with pumpkins seems
to hold to that.
if you plant an old one and it comes up- then the
plant is fine and won't have any adverse effect because
the seed was old.

In a zip lock in a jar in the freezer is the way to go.
