How old can a seed be and still produce a good plant and pumpkin. Were there any seeds planted before say 1998 this year. if so any success?

My 625.4 this year was grown on a 631 Kuhn 1995 seed. As long as they are properly dried and stored they can last up to 6 or 7 years (maybe longer).

Should the storage be an air tight container?

Many people around the world store seeds in glass jars, they are pest proof.

I read somewhere that in general a group of seeds will lose 10% viability each year. ie- 1st year 90% will germinate 2nd year 80% will germinate 3rd year 70% will germinate 4th year 60% will germinate etc... but my limited experience with pumpkins seems to hold to that. if you plant an old one and it comes up- then the plant is fine and won't have any adverse effect because the seed was old.
In a zip lock in a jar in the freezer is the way to go.
