The SPGA will be doing an online auction, or raffle, after the website is finished in early 2005.
What would be folks first choice and most likely to participate in? What would be a reasonable dollar figure for per draw if raffle?
There will be such seeds available as the 845 Bobier '00, 1260 Weir, 805 Pukos, 695 Handy, 1097 Beachy, 895.5 Hester*, 611.5 Hester, etc., many more excellent seed.
Thanks for your input. Your replies will dictate largely what I intend to do.

If you want to raise as much money for the SPGA as possible then I would do an auction. Nothing will beat it money-wise...

If you want to help out growers by providing fair chances then I'd do a raffle. If you can guarantee that each draw will get any seed (of course not necessarily one of the ones you listed but at least something) then I'd say that 10$ per draw and 3 draws for 20 or 25$ would be adequate.

Why not hold an auction, but reserve one top seed for raffle, to be drawn auction night! May bring a little more excitement to the auction!

I agree with Martin ideas. I really like the raffle idea. It gives those of us with a limited budget for seeds the chance to support a group financially, and have a chance to get some really good seeds. I like the way Ernie did the WCGPGA raffle last winter. Unless my lottery tickets come in, I doubt I would be purchasing seeds in an auction for quite a while.

Do both!

If the raffle is reasonably priced, I would expect it to make more than any individual seed auction. There may not be many people who can afford to spend $375 at a seed auction. But, couldn't you get 100 people who can afford to spend $5?

The only problem that I see with a raffle is that it may require a license in some places. Since a raffle could be considered gambling, you may need a special permit to make it all legal. But, if you were to offer something in return, win or lose, that might get you around that challenge. For example, you could sell an SPGA sticker for $5, and each sticker purchase would earn a free raffle ticket. In my totally non-expert legal opinion, that should be fine. :-)

I like the raffle idea the best. For Canadian growers to bid, it costs us an extra .20 -.25 on the dollar. Even the Canadian clubs raffle using the US dollar. On a $100 US bid, that raises our cost to $120-125 Can. I would rather put $20-25 into each clubs raffle and have a "chance" at winning several seeds, than buy one at a auction for anywhere from $100-300 US a seed. I would like to support all your clubs, but auctions are too rich for my blood. That's just my opinion, but I know a few growers that feel the same way.

OK, I like the auction/raffle combo idea, you guys have been helpful. I'm gonna fund the website instead of trying to force it on folks to help, and I want to #1) make money for the group which would be banked towards a potential weigh-off, and #2) give *everybody* a shot at a decent seed. I don't even do auctions because they're too rich for my blood as well. I really liked the Wisconsin raffle format last year, at least everybody had a shot at that 1260 Weir.
I have to give Maureen Dill credit for keeping me focused to keep going with the SPGA and doing the fundraiser. She's been very helpful and you folks wouldn't believe what this woman knows about successfully setting up organizations, fundraising, promotion, marketing, etc., I'd be lost without her advice. Howard and Danny have given me endorsement for the auction/raffle, and are donating seed themselves. The Dill family is truly a credit to this hobby, there is no others as generous and helpful!
