Have decided to re-locate 3 small oak trees(5/6) ft high, 2 nine feet high maple trees and a ten year old(extemely- thorny) gooseberry bush.(Guess who's planning to expand his patch)LOL....my question is would it be better to do this right now (we've already had one light frost) or wait till Spring.(leaves on still on all these trees)....any(good) advice would be appreciated!....Bill

If you move them in the fall, wait until the leaves are off or totally dry so it is dormant. Then water them in good and mulch to prevent frost heave. If you move them in the spring, do so when they are dormant, before the leaves startto sprout. Keep them well watered if you don't get 1" of rain per week. Try to get as much root ball as you can when you move the. If you lose some roots, it wouldn't hurt to do some pruning so the roots don't have as much top to feed the first year.

Thanks for the good advice and the prompt reply.(...makes sense to me )....I'll wait for a couple of weeks but it shouldn't be too long,( we may be visited by Tropical storm Ophelia this week-end and that will probably remove quite a few leaves)...cheers,Bill
