When do you start these babies? Do they need to be filed or soaked?

You are in Ontario; so heat isn't as much of a problem as New Jersey. You want to keep them out of direct sun if temps get into the 90+ degree range for any period of time. Heat seems to be a big limiting factor with them. I have a garden in NY and my garden in NJ. The NY garden is 2 1/2 hours north, and all my marrows there are usually over 10-20 pounds larger. We had a cooler year two years ago in NJ, and they were much bigger that year than last year. Keep the temps similar to UK summer temps and you cna get them really big. I started mine in the beginning of April and put them under a mini-greenhouse tent) to prevent frost. My hope is to get them big in June to avoid the heat in July.
