Desert Storm

New Brunswick

Some little speckled flying insects (not potato beetles) nipped the tiny blossom buds off my potato plants this year, so I have no idea when the potatoes should be ready. I always counted three weeks after blossoming but can't do that this year. My early ones are Fundys and they were planted June 20th. I was late getting them in as it rained all spring. Anyway, we did a spot check to see if there were any potatoes developing and found one and one only edible sized potato under each of the two plants I checked. There were only a couple or so of teeny weeny little potatoes on the ends of an occacional sprout. The other sprouts had nothing. Other than the one big edible size potatoes, things looked pretty unproductive. Why is there only one potato per plant? Do I have a problem?

1st problem is June 20th for a plant date. We have ours planted by middle of April and we just dug the early ones last week. They have not had time to grow potatoes. Try again next year.

Oh my goodness...not to panic here...but our growing season is just getting going. No one digs around here before September, October. (Excpet for growers that planted for early potatoes) We just got over anxious. I talked to a potato grower this morning and he said "be patient"...we jumped the gun er... potato a bit. LOL
