whats the best way to dry out ears of indian corn for decoration? Currently I have a few in my dehydrator set at 115 degrees. This is a trial and error thing for me. Any good ideas?
Thanks, Brooks

Just read Shannons answer in a post on hanging, I tried this kinda in my pump house where its alot cooler but the ears seemed to rot with nats everywhere, I didnt hang them but I did stand them on end on a shelf leaning against the wall. This must not be the proper way huh Shannon?,lol

just get a metal rack or metal shelves that have holes in them. Then, make sure the indian corn in ripe. This means that the husks look a little dry and the corn silk on top of the corn is pretty much dry. Then put the corn on the racks and leave until you can peel them. As soon as they are peeled, you can put them together in bunches or just leave them on the rack until used. I would not suggest dehydrating them because the corn will prematurely dry up. The colors are the best when the corn is fully ripe and allowed to dry by itself. It is also a lot harder to peel "green" corn because the husks break off when pulled back. Good luck.

I had good luck in the past by running a wire across the inside of my garage, and tying bundles of ears on the wire with string. This keeps any pesky critters from getting into the corn. It works with popcorn also. The corn has to be mature with fairly dry husks.
