Guy has a an older submersible pump for sale. It is supposed to pump 25 gpm which seems really big for my needs but... I want to use it to pump from a creek behind my house which is about a 10-15 foot drop. Anyone have experience with these and is this a reasonable deal for "everything". Don't need fancy or expensive. Ad follows:
"Used Gould Submersible water well pump and motor. Pump is Goulds 25GR412, 25 gallons per minute motor is Franklin 240vac single phase 1.5 hp motor includes 80' 12/3 well cable, control box, pump, motor. The pump was in use for 15 years. I flowed all my sprinklers to keep the motor on when watering so it would not cycle on and off. Also had two 85 gallon tanks so the house water would not cycle it."
Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

Seems like a good deal, its much better to have more drawing power than not enough. You can alway put a pressure reducer in line on your system. If drawing out of a creek make sure you put a filter on the end of your draw hose. Buy a simple electronic timer and your can water during the day on hot days also.

I have a creek near my patch but don't have electric at that spot. I have no idea about pumps. Do they make small gas pumps that I could use to pump water to a patch.

You guys planning to pump water from creeks or streams...pay attention to local enviromental laws..and get the required permits. The fines for irrigating from a stream with out the required permits are pretty high.

Eric,, you are looking at a deep well submersible pump there. You should talk to a "well man" about what is required for placing that type of pump in a creek to filter the supply water. Also an electrician for what is required to supply power to a pump that big at the distance you will have to run the line.
Jeff,, yes they are commonly called "trash pumps" check ebay or google.
and yes Shannon is right on the money with checking the permitting for drawing water from public water sources

Thanks. I knew it was a deep well pump but the price was right, powerful and came with everything I needed. My concern was the same as you pointed out, how to filter. The pump is required to be placed at least 15 degrees off horizontal, etc.
I have an "old" well that has not been used for probably 20 years (I have only been in the house 11), which has standing water at about 12 feet, but has a huge depth of sandy silt not too far below. I am also checking to see what it will cost to put it back in operation as it would be the best way to proceed.
I looked at trash pumps too to alleviate the need to run the electrical but I don't have the time to being starting the pump and need a more automated solution.
Looking for a balance between cost, ease, etc. I don't think I watered nearly enough last year and since water is so readily available for "free" I thought I'd better take advantage of it.

And if anyone has a "great" setup for pumping out of a creek/pond/etc. and has pics/schematics/etc. let me know what diary to look at or how to take a look.
