Are there other tools on the web to help me search the US Grin? Yes! With maize, there are other resources on the web that will help you search the US Grin and piece together the complicated relationship between different landraces and cultivars of maize.
The most important one that I’ve found is the Maize Genetics Database. http://www.maizegdb.org/
There are many important tools on the Maizegdb for helping you search the US Grin.
For example, you know about ‘Jala’ maize; so we do a search on ‘Jala’ at the top of the page http://www.maizegdb.org/cgi-bin/anythingsearch.cgi?term=jala
You can actually link back to the US Grin to see specific seeds they have of Jala. (*note* this is not every seed inventory listed in the database for Jala.)
You can also get information from the maizegdb about Jala. click ‘1 stock record’ http://www.maizegdb.org/cgi-bin/displaystockresults.cgi?term=jala
click the word ‘Jala Race’ http://www.maizegdb.org/cgi-bin/displaystockrecord.cgi?id=102132

We get the following description below:
Jala race (stock) This stock is also known by the following names: Jala Jala race (per Canonical Name) Available From: CIMMYT Maize Program Country: Mexico Pedigree: Probably derived from Comiteco, with an introgression of genes from Tabloncillo. Type: race (?) Parent(s): Comiteco race Tabloncillo race Phenotypes: dent kernel long ear white endosperm Description: Jala race Comments: Very tall, very late maturing plants. Very long ears with large, white dent kernels. In its pure form, Jala is found only in the Jala valley (1,000 m altitude) of southern Nayarit state in western Mexico.
As you can see, the parent races of Jala are Comiteco and Tabloncillo. You can click on them as well and read about them. This gives you clues about other giant varities of maize. You can use this to research these varieties on the US Grin, or google search the words Comiteco and Tabloncillo to possible find clues about their heights.
