I want to plant garlic this fall & I've never grown it before. Do I have to order ( or find) bulbs just for that purpose or can I just go to the store & get a few bulbs of Elephant garlic & plant those cloves. Thanks...Paul

most store bought garlic is fine! if u can get elephant garlic, use it too. the elephant will take a lot longer to come through, mine was over 4 weeks later than normal garlic last year.

Are seeds better than starting a from a clove of garlic? How deep do you plan them? Thanks Chris

Here's what I have learned about growing garlic (at least in the north). It's important that you get the garlic in early enough that the bulb sprouts some roots and some tops before the freeze. I have found that if the plant does that, then I will have garlic in the spring. Otherwise, I will just have rot.

Paul, do yourself a favor and do not get the crap you can buy in the store, it comes from china... I got some of the best tasting garlic from a fellow AG grower that has his own greenhouses, I planted 50 cloves yesterday! Check it out: http://www.perrysgreenhouse.com/store/ He is a really cool guy too, goes by the name of Greenhousin here on BP. Lots of really nice tutorials on his website. Tom
