I been wanting to try this for a while since I seen these kind of apple trees being sold in catalogs. I want to take 3 different variety apple trees and graft the branches from each tree onto a different tree. I think it would be neat to see, and kinda fun to watch it grow. Be neat to get your early apples, then get your late apples off the same tree and to have a variety of apples.

Anyone ever do this type grafting or have this type apple tree?

Havent tried this but remember that most apples need a pollinator. Meaning some apples are self fertile and some need a pollinator. I believe that Starks catalog has a list of what apples pollinate what apple. Good luck.

Brooks, my Dad grafted 2 apples trees when I was a kid and it was the coolest thing to have red and green apples growing on the same tree. Some good info at;

I have seen this done, there are a few cons.
1. When u prune u could cut an intire variety before u relize it.

2. The dominate branch is ussually on the top 2.

3. Shepard's hook or fire blight can run rampant in the apple trees. Streptomyacin is used during the bloomingstage to prevent the spread of fire blight. (make sure u get healthy specimans.

4. Dont forget to thin out the fruit a little. this helps get the apples a little bigger and prevents the branch from snapping from heavy weight.

Contact your local extension office and they should be able to help u.
good luck

Captain, is that Steptomyacin what they use on the tree after it flowers? I heard of alot people talking about spraying there apple trees early, is this what they are spraying for?

Mr.Brooks, you can graft a pear and an apple.
they already sell a combination, its a japanese variety of this type,
its called 20th century.
If you graft them yourself. or you buy already grafted trees, make sure you like the taste of the different varietys.
I just grew a couple of trees of plum apricot, combination

Brooks easy to do if you know how.dont graft branches do buding.must get your buds this time of year and put in refg
All fruit trees are grafted. grafting has no affect on fire blight. pear and apple graft wont last. lots of sprays used on apple makes pumpkin growing look easy

Brooks it would be unlikely to get a apple to graft to a pear or vice versa. The apple is in the malus genus and the pear is in the genus pyrus. It is unlikely to get a successful lasting graft between two different genus'. It has been done though, They used to graft quince (cydonia oblonga to Pear (pyrus communis)the quince rootstock was used to impart a dwarfing characteristic to the more vigorous growth of the pear. Generally speaking grafting should be done with other plants of the same genus and better yet the same species. Graft apples with apples and so on. The genetic makeup between two different genus' of trees is ususally to different. Even with trees that graft very well over time you may see slight graft incompatibilities. The rootstock may grow a lot faster than the top. Don't be afraid to try grafting, Get someone to show you how or get a good book. You will see that it isn't that complicated if you know the basics. Early spring is a good time of year to play with grafting. I am by no means an expert myself, Plants are pretty cool and amazing and doing grafting can be alot of fun.

I am sorry Brooks CCW and Indiana grower are correct. I guess just because I have never seen something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Lesson learned.
